Year 11 Global Studies Overview

Students may select one or more of the following Global Studies semester courses:

Accounting / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

In Stage 1 Accounting, students develop their understanding of the practice of accounting. They explore the ways in which qualitative and quantitative information can be used to report to a range of stakeholders. They develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills to devise accounting solutions. Students will understand personal and professional accounting and financial sustainability by building their financial literacy.

Assessment

Four tasks.

Additional Details

Students who are considering a business pathway might choose to study both Business Innovation and Accounting.
Successful completion of this subject can lead to any of the Stage 2 Global Studies subjects.

Ancient Studies / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

In Ancient Studies, students learn about the history, literature, society and culture of ancient civilisations, most notably of Greece and Rome. Students explore the ideas and innovations that shaped these societies.

Assessment

Four tasks, including at least one inquiry.

Ancient Studies is a language-rich subject and strong literacy and communication skills are required.
Successful completion of this subject can lead to any of the Stage 2 Global Studies subjects.

Business Innovation / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

In Business Innovation, students learn how to engage in business contexts in the modern world. This subject will explore the marketing that drives business, and how to ensure that your prospective business takes a customer focused approach.

Assessment

Examining businesses and business models.
Developing a business pitch.

Successful completion of this subject can lead to any of the Stage 2 Global Studies subjects.

Driver Safety / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

In Driver Safety, students will address the safety issues affecting young drivers on the road. This subject hopes to create better informed drivers and hopefully prevent future road statistics. There are no practical driving elements in this course.

Assessment

Community-based activities.
Source and article analysis.
Excursion/guest speaker responses.

Additional Details

This subject is assessed according to the Stage 1 Integrated Learning and Community Studies performance standards.
This subject does not lead to any Stage 2 Global Studies subjects.
There may be a cost throughout the semester for excursions and opportunities that align with the Learning and Assessment Plan.

Geography / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

In Geography, students will explore diverse environmental phenomena and human activities. A key focus of this course is the sustainability of megacities, a human or environmental geographical issue, and the completion of fieldwork. The course is a hands-on course with field trips to help students understand our world, identify patterns and use spatial technologies.

Assessment

Four summative tasks including field work, data analysis and report writing.

There will be a small cost for field trips and excursions throughout the semester.
Successful completion of this subject can lead to any of the Stage 2 Global Studies subjects.

Legal Studies / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

In Legal Studies, students will explore the Australian legal system, how it provides for fairness and justice, and how the system can sometimes get it wrong. Through this, how the legal system responds and contributes to social change while acknowledging tradition will also be explored.

Assessment

An analytical response.
An inquiry.
A presentation.
An in-class response.

Modern History / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

In Modern History, students will explore significant events of the 20th century, the motivations of people at the time and the effect of their actions. In particular, John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the Vietnam War and genocides are a key focus of this subject.

Assessment

Three folio tasks: source analysis, historical atlas, etc.
Historical study.

Society and Culture / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

Students will explore current social or cultural issues to analyse how people within Australia and across the world function in constantly changing societies. Topics may include power and authority in society, discrimination, popular culture, Australian culture or the role of the media in defining culture.

A group activity.
An investigation.
Sources analysis.

Tourism / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

In Tourism, students investigate the sustainable management of tourism from a local, national and global perspective. Students will learn about the complex economic, social, cultural and environmental impacts and interactions of tourism activity.

A case study.
Source analysis.
Practical activity.
An investigation.
