Learn to Crochet

Lesson 6 - Starburst Square

Here is a great practice activity for more circles, but of a different variety! These squares could be used to eventually stitch together and make a blanket or they could easily be modified to make into dish rags, pot coasters, or art! You could also just stop before adding the square part to have a circle. Check out our friend from SimplyDaisy on this great tutorial!

Lesson 5 - Make a Toque! (Beanie in the U.S.)

Making toques and hats is my favorite thing to crochet! I have made a ton of toques! I hope you enjoy it as my as I do. Check out the video and get started. Your first one will probably take a long time... but don't worry you will get faster!

Lesson 4 - Granny Squares!

Granny squares are a great way to get started on a blanked or afghan. You could either make a bunch of squares then join them together later or make one giant granny square to be your blanket!

Check out the video for the complete demonstration and have fun!

Lesson 3 - Circles!

There are two basic ways to start crochet circles, the regular way and the magic loop. It might take a bit of practice to get the magic loop down, but it definitely is the more superior method in my opinion.

Once you get them started there are also two ways to go around. You can either go in a spiral where you simply just keep going around, or you can start each round by adding a chain and then crocheting to around to that chain. Check the 'spiral' and 'flat circle' videos for the difference.

There are also two ways to crochet when making a circle. You can add stitches to make the circle grow in a flat shape outward (like if you were making a pot cloth or doily) or you can not add stitches to make a tube (like a sock). If making a toque you will need to do a mix of both. The 'Flat Circle' video already covers how to make the circle grow outward, but check out the video 'How to Crochet in the Round' for the tube type crochet.

Good luck, and have fun!

Lesson 2

Next Steps

Materials needed to proceed:

  • Crochet hook & a ball of yarn

What you'll learn:

  • Half double crochet

  • Double crochet

  • Triple crochet

Notes:

In this next tutorial you will learn a few more stitches that will slightly change your work. Smaller stitches are a little tighter and also take longer to build up, so the project will take a bit longer. Larger stitches are looser and usually you can easily stick your fingers through them. These stitches go a little faster. Try and find a balance. By far, my favorite stitch is the half double.

Once you got the different stitches down go ahead and make something like a scarf!

Lesson 1

March 27 - Happy Birthday Crochet!

Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me! Today is my birthday and I wanted to share a fun skill that you can easily do at home... Crochet! Don't worry if you think it is hard, really if you can tie a knot, you can crochet.

Back when I was a young warthog, I lived and worked in the mountains at ski resorts... now back then WiFi wasn't really a thing and even cell service was scarce in the mountains. So my wife and I learned to crochet! And we did it a lot. In fact, when we lived in France we would make toques and scarves and sell them. Throughout the season we made over 300 Euro selling homemade goods. Pretty fun part time job eh?

So here are a couple videos to get you started.

The Beginnings

Materials needed to proceed:

  • Crochet hook & a ball of yarn

Notes:

I would recommend following the tutorial and get yourself a chain. Once you get that double back and start going end to end, just as she does, to begin making a square. Don't worry if it looks terrible you can always take it out.

Once you got the square down you could easily make a dish cloth which is a really easy, and useful, first project.

*FYI: She is using 'Boye' crochet hooks with a tapered throat, and those are the cat's pajamas! (That's how adults say really good) I usually use a 'J' or 'K' size hook 'cause it makes a slightly bulkier project which I like better. But really for learning you can use any old hook.
