Oil Pastel Introduction

Follow the images below for instructions

1.

Get a peice of black construction paper.

2.

Fold it in half.

3.

Fold in half again.

4.

Fold in half one last time.

5.

Unfold it. There should be eight small rectangles.

6.

Number the eight rectangles.

7.

Highlight - adding a lighter colour or white to another colour.

8.

Shading - adding a darker colour or black to another colour.

9.

Blending - Mixing two colours together.

10.

Scumbling - scribbling with a colour. This can be done hard or lightly.

11.

Hatch or Cross Hatch - making lines that are parallel in nature. They can cross over each other and be curved.

12.

Feathering - start by pressing hard with the oil pastel and then releasing pressure as you draw the line. Great for fur and hair.

13.

Pointalism - Using dots of colours to draw your picture. You can do this to visually blend colours as well.

14.

Scraffitti - using a sharp tool to scratch away details in your oil pastels.

15.

On the back of your black paper draw a funny cartoon character that uses as many of the techniques we tried today.
