Beginning May 9, 2024, when videos are recorded with audio content, closed captions will be automatically generated as part of the video processing using Kaltura Capture and Express Capture. Processing times for auto-generated captions will vary depending on the length of the content. This new feature will also create captions for uploaded videos with audio content.
Videos created or uploaded prior to May 9, 2024 that did not have captions before this update will need to request captions using the 'Adding Captions for Kaltura Videos' instructions.
Navigate to the Kaltura - My Media page via the More Tools Menu.
Open the Express Capture Video by clicking on the title in your My Media area.
Open the “Actions” menu at the bottom right of the video and select “+Caption & Enrich.”
Ensure the selection for Source Media Language is “English” and click the “Submit” button.
A confirmation message appears along with the caption request information and shares that captions will be automatically added to your video upon completion.
Captions should be reviewed and edited for accuracy. To review and edit captions, navigate to the video in your My Media area. Click on the title of the video to open the item.
Select “+Caption Requests” from the “Actions” menu.
The Caption & Enrich area provides a listing of all caption requests for the video. Select the “Edit” button to the right to open the captions for review.
The caption editing will open in a new tab called “Closed Captions Editor.” Here’s an image of the captions before editing.
The editor has two main areas Captions Panel and Player Panel:
Captions panel - Displays the captions and the editing options, including the following:
Edit details (1)- Click to change the caption's language, accuracy, and label.
Search (2) - Type a search term and hit 'enter' on your keyboard. The results are highlighted in each caption line.
Replace (3)-Quickly find specific words or phrases in captions and replace them with new ones.
Autoscroll (4)- Click to enable to auto-scroll captions as the media plays.
Trash icon (5) - Click to delete that caption line.
Add caption line - Click to add a new line of text.
Timestamp (6) - Click to modify the time.
Caption text (7) - Click to modify the text.
Player panel - Displays the video player allowing you to sync the text with the audio and visuals in real-time to ensure each caption line accurately aligns with the on-screen content. Select any caption line and he player jumps to the correct frame for the selected text as shown in the example below.
Make any necessary edit changes and select Save button above the Player Panel and select Back button, your video is now ready to be submitted to either your Discussion Thread, or Assignment Submission folder.

You can review and verify captions by ensuring that captions are turned on in the CC menu at the bottom right of your video. Captions will now display at the bottom of the video.
You can also verify the captions by reviewing within the Transcript Widget, which will display below the player panel.

The Kaltura video tool embedded in Purdue Global’s instance of the Brightspace LMS includes a transcript widget. The transcript widget increases the accessibility of Kaltura videos in the classroom to accommodate viewers who are hearing or visually impaired.
Once the user enables the caption feature and the processing is finished, closed captioning will display within the video. The transcript will automatically display below the video.
Viewers can play the video, view the closed captions, and follow the transcript. The text in the transcript is highlighted as it is played in the video. Viewers can search for specific text in the transcript file using the search field at the top of the transcript widget. Viewers can download or print the transcript caption file by selecting the 3 dots next to the Search bar.
