The Brightspace homepage is what students see when they first log into the Learning Management System (LMS). Easy access to their courses, emails, and updates can be found here.
Once you've logged into your Brightspace classroom, you'll be able to move through the class using the top navigation tools.
A variety of tools are available, including:
Select a Course
Subscription Alerts
Update Alerts
Profile
Select a course is found on the top right. It is indicated by a set of nine dots.
Click to open the select course menu.
The first section will display a search field.
Click the "pushpin" icon to the right of the course name to "pin" a course so it will appear first on the list.
Pinned courses are highlighted in blue and the pin icon is filled.
To "unpin," click again so that the line is no longer highlighted and the pin icon is not filled.
Students can access the My Courses widget from their Brightspace homepage. This widget contains course cards for courses that the student has been enrolled in. Past and Present courses can be accessed through this widget.
The All tab displays all courses a student is enrolled in.
The Pinned tab displays any pinned courses the student may have. The Pinned tab will only appear if there are pinned courses.
To Pin/Unpin a course:
Hover over the course card and select the three dots.
Click Pin/Unpin.
The Pin icon indicates if a course has been pinned. Clicking on this icon is another way to Unpin a course.
The terms a student is enrolled in will display along the top of the widget. Clicking the Right arrow will scroll through the available terms. Clicking on a term will display only the courses for that term.
Course cards will contain the course name, course code, term, and end date. Clicking on a card will open up that course.
If more courses are available, there will be a link to View All Courses at the bottom of the widget. This link will include the number of courses in parentheses.
The Email icon allows students to send an email to any of their classmates or to their instructor. See the Sending Emails in Brightspace section for more details.
These alerts will display by clicking on the bell icon. A red dot over the icon will indicate an unread alert.
Your profile picture is displayed in the Profile area. Adding a profile picture is optional. If you do not upload a profile picture, the navbar displays your initials in the user-profile badge. The image displays in several areas of Brightspace. For example, the image will show in your profile, discussion forums, classlist, etc.
Steps to add a profile image:
On the Brightspace Home page, access your Personal menu by selecting your name in the top right corner of the page.
From the drop-down menu, select Profile.
On the Edit My User Profile page, select the Change Picture button.
In the pop-up window, select Upload.
Browse to find and select your profile photo, and then select the Open button.
Select the Add button on the pop-up window.
Select Save and Close at the bottom of the page.
Photo Guidelines
Upload a photo of yourself that will be stored in your profile within Brightspace. This photo will be displayed for all of your classes. Uploading your photo is completely optional. Keep in mind that your photo could be copied and disseminated by others.
Students must follow the Student Code of Conduct and Netiquette guidelines outlined in the course syllabus. IT Services are authorized to remove inappropriate photos.
Tips for Creating a Great Profile Picture
Make the picture a head and shoulders shot.
Select a picture with a "clean" background, avoiding clutter or other individuals.
Make sure that you are dressed appropriately for a professional environment.
Avoid objects/clothing that reference alcohol, drugs, or other symbols that could potentially reflect negatively on your character.
Keep the size of the image small (100 x 100 pixels is recommended). Uploading a differently sized image could result in loss of quality, stretching, or cropping.
The maximum file size allowed for profile pictures is 1 MB. If you attempt to upload a larger file size, it will fail to upload.
Accepted file formats for profile pictures are JPG, JPEG, or PNG.
Do's and Dont’s
Do post a professional-looking photo of yourself.
Do not include other individuals in your picture.
Do not post material that embarrasses, intimidates, threatens, harasses, or creates a hostile, offensive environment.
Do not copy and paste or distribute photos of anyone.
