Sport and Physical Education at Pt England School is put together by our sports coordinator in collaboration with senior management, classroom teachers, Sport Auckland and organisations in our community. The programme is delivered by teachers, kiwisport coaches and volunteer coaches and managers. Key people who have shared the coaching roles for this year for sports teams are our support staff, Tyson Puru, Timmi Nouata and Roni Wright.
Our kiwisport funding goes towards a P.E programme that comprises of 40-45 minute lessons, once a week over a period of 4-6 weeks, which is delivered by a coach from a regional sports organisation (RSO). The appointed Sport Auckland representative for the Tamaki Cluster this year was Georgie Gatenby who arranges the contracts with RSO's. From a list of available sporting codes, we choose a different one for each term for our students.
The sports coordinator creates a timetable for classroom teachers to select a lesson time for kiwisport coaches, which is then shared with the RSO. Our students have enjoyed the exposure and experience of trying various codes throughout the year.
This year our Year 1-3 students had Get, Set, Go (fundamental skills), Gymnastics, Hip Hop and Taekwon-Do. The Year 4-8 students had Cricket, Basketball, Hockey and AFL (Aussie Rules).
We had 52 volunteer coaches and managers - consisting of 15 family members (5 dads, 9 mums, 1 uncle) plus 35 staff members (includes 3 mums, 4 aunties, 1 cousin) and 2 students. There were 92 teams who competed at inter-school and club competitions this year. Our sports programme would not have been possible without the dedication, love and support of our volunteer coaches and managers. They not only commit hours to instruct and train our students, but they also provide mentoring, encouraging them to become better people. A number of our parent volunteers are also involved in our local clubs in either rugby union, rugby league, netball, basketball, softball, touch, cricket and tag football.
Our sports teams trained and represented the school at the Tamaki Cluster, Eastern Zone AAIMS, Inter Zone AAIMS and the International AIMS tournaments, sports exchanges and club competitions, across 15 codes:
Our most successful teams (1st place at Auckland Inter-Zone level):
Paikea competed at the AIMS Games in Tauranga for Swimming: 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, 100m Backstroke, 50m Butterfly
She attended the games with her parents, Sam and Lana and represented our school very well. We are proud of Paikea's achievement.
In order for our teams to compete at the Auckland Inter-Zone level, they would need to have won a pre-qualifying tournament, either the AIMS Eastern Zone or the Tamaki Cluster competition.
The following intermediate students were selected as Auckland representatives this year.
Cricket U14s Eastern District
Netball (no longer a representative programme, it is called 'Development')
Rugby Union - Walter Dickson U57kgs Remuera
Rugby Union - Auckland East Bill McLaren Representative
Rugby Union - Auckland East Storm Representative
Rugby Union - Auckland U13 Representative
In Terms 3 and 4, we held two whole school-wide sporting events: our annual Cross Country and Athletics days.
Students are expected to participate and are encouraged to wear their house coloured clothes: (Te Aurere - red), (Hikianalia - yellow), (Hine Moana - blue) and (Hokule'a - green). Our house captains for 2019 were
Te Aurere: Tupuia, Chastyti
Hikianalia: Mataio Kurtas, Petesa
Hine Moana: Leonardy, Monika
Hokule'a: Leiite, Paikea
Our swimming lessons were held at the Glen Innes Aquatics Centre. The Years 1, 2, 7 & 8 classes had eight half hour lessons which were taken by the classroom teacher. The Year 3-6 classes had 10 half hour lessons that are funded and organised under Sport Auckland's GAAAP (Greater Auckland Aquatics Action Plan) programme. Each class is fortunate to have three swim instructors in the pool, who work with students according to their ability. This has shown a significant improvement in the students' attitude, confidence and competence in the water.
We are very grateful for Sandy Lagitupu who coordinates the videographers to travel with a team or ensures that we depart with a camera and tripod for footage to be captured. The videographers or Sandy produce highlights for PENN and is shared on our school website.
If sporting events are held at the Mt Wellington War Memorial Reserve on Dunkirk Road, we will walk there and back. For events that involve less than 30 students, we borrow Garth Jacobsen's van and a couple from Tamaki College. If 30 or more participants and coaches, we will hire a bus or in some instances, the vans were not available and a bus was hired to transport teams.
A trolley filled with various sports gear is available for any student to borrow during lunchtime only. Gear such as basketballs, rugby balls, netballs, tennis balls, hula hoops, hoppers and skipping ropes.
Before any game or tournament, we say a karakia and chant "I are representing myself, my family, my school, my community" and the school karakia which is led by a team leader.
We held our 7th annual sports expo during the 'Meet the Teacher' evening in early February this year. We invited local sports clubs to attend this day to share information about their organisation with the possibility of registering new members. There was a huge increase in interest from students and parents to register their child to play in a sports team.
We successfully held our 6th netball prizegiving in the evening this year, inviting family and friends to bring food to share. It was a wonderful evening, celebrating the efforts of every player and acknowledging our dedicated coaches and managers. At both ceremonies, there were awards for the most improved player, for sportsmanship and for the most valuable team player.
Sports is a huge part of our school life, engaging a lot of our students and community. Due to the increase and success of our programme in numbers, I would highly recommend:
