Jackson Vogt continued teaching the Makerspace programme through 2019.
All Year 1 students attended the Makerspace an hour each week, while all Year 2-6 students attended in the Makerspace in alternate weeks. The other half of the class attended the Creative Space with Sandy Lagitupu giving class teachers their weekly hour long CRT allowance and providing a unique hands on small group learning programme taught by specialist teachers.
Jackson worked with teachers across Teams 1-4 to develop learning that complemented and extended the school wide inquiry focus at each level. Planning and preparation for the projects has ensured the continuity and sequence of learning throughout the school as well as the resourcing of tools and materials for each project.
Lunch time sessions are open to Team 5 students who show aptitude and enthusiasm for hands on creative activities.
Jackson and Sandy were responsible for overseeing the Digital Technologies Curriculum, supporting teachers across the school with their pilot groups and supervising lunchtime code clubs.
The teaching in the Makerspace has a strong commitment to cultural responsiveness and Jackson also took responsibility for a range of projects and clubs that reflected our theme of 'Kaitiakitanga i ngā Wā Katoa' from the perspective of communities represented in our school and their aspirations.
Jackson is responsible for this initiative to sort and collect recycling that was previously going to landfill in 2017.
Jackson coordinated the Bincurity Squad - a voluntary group of students who coordinate the collection of bins and help remind their peers about recycling.
Bincurity students have created a media production group - 'BincuriT.V' which has started to make short educational videos about recycling for the school's PENN news.
With the assistance of a grant from Curious Minds Jackson teaches a group of nine gifted and talented students who are interested in extending their scientific practice once a week.
These students are the R&D arm of Bincurity, focussing on inventing and building smart online recycling bins and are supported by engineers from Fisher & Paykel Healthcare and a Scientist from Citizen Science.
Students work with the expectation that their creations are designed for purpose and will be deployed in school.
