The students working in these groups have been withdrawn from their class for:
Year 5/6 : 2 x 90 min periods /week
Year 7/8 : 1 x 2.5 hour period /week
The focus for the Extension group this year has been on exploring and using the Paideia method to improve their critical thinking skills. It was also about providing rich learning experiences for the students to develop their overall knowledge and understanding about the world we live in. It was also a good opportunity to continue to develop and improve their oral language and communication skills.
During the year the Extension group were involved in the day to day running of PENN (Pt England News Network) where the students produce and present content for PENN
Many students from our Extension group are also our school leaders and ambassadors who have had the responsibility of sharing with the wider community about the Pt England Way and our Learn, Create, Share pedagogy.
Year 5 and 6 Extension:
Term 1 - Eels and Maramataka
At the start of each year, the main focus is always based on the theme of ‘The Pt England Way’ and Learn, Create, Share. This year our school wide focus was based on ‘Kia Pai Te Kotahi - Better Together’. In term one the Year 5 extension students were introduced to the idea of the Paideia method. The Year 5&6 Extension group had the privilege of having eel expert Dave Cooper visit us in term one. Dave shared his knowledge about Longfin Eels. We are also fortunate that we have our very own eel tank at school that Mr Vogt takes care of. The students had the opportunity to visit and feed the eels. Students had to create a DLO based on their knowledge of Eels and Maramataka (Maori Lunar Calendar)
Students also had to create a game on Scratch with some help from Walter from OMGTech!

A small group of students also entered the Outlook for Someday movie making competition. Their movie was about Eels and the interesting life of an eel. During term 4, the students found out that their movie was one of the 10 winning movies.

Term 4
Although the school wide theme was ‘Life’s a Stage’ and the focus was on dance and drama, our students had the opportunity to learn about science. The students worked with Ray Shah over several weeks to learn about UV light and the harmful effects of UV light. They also created their own UV sensors using different components, wires and a mini solar panel.

Students listened to a presentation at KPMG which was delivered by experts from Tonkin and Taylor. Then they visited an organisation called Sustainable Coastlines.
In term 3 our Year 7&8 Extension students collaborated to create their movie for the film festival. They decided on the theme of a ‘murder mystery’. A script was created and part of the movie was filmed and edited by our students. Their movie was one of the five selected from our school to be shown at the evening show of the Manaiakalani Film Festival.

Manaiakalani Film Festival
Many of our students were involved as actors, videographers, editors and presenters at this year’s Manaiakalani Film Festival. Our Extension students produced two movies for the film festival. The movies were fun to produce, entertaining and enjoyed by many.

Extension students school wide service
All extension students from year 5 to 8 understand that they are responsible for the daily running of PENN - Pt England News Network. It is vital that we deliver on this daily as it is an integral part of the Pt England Way.
The standard of presentation by the PENN presenters and producers has again improved. A very exciting and positive part of extension that as a school we celebrate and enjoy.
Ambassadors
The high standard of PENN presenters is seen clearly in a selected crew who present to our many visitors. They communicate to our visitors the way our school learns in its many different areas. This team of extension students were trained and led by Dorothy Burt and Mr Kent Somerville. This year’s group had a wonderful opportunity not only with the visitors to our schools, but travelling to various venues in and outside of Auckland.
Student Hosts
Both our year 7 and 8 extension group students have taken on the role as hosts for our visitors this year. They are assigned a small group of visitors each and guide them around our school.
Visitors to Pt England
Once again we have had many visitors to our school throughout the year. Our students are increasingly aware of the global audience who are keen to participate, interact and contribute to their learning journey. This has become a huge motivating tool for this group of students. They are aware of the importance of how they present themselves to the visitors and the world.
Communication through our daily news programme (PENN) and movie making opportunities has prompted the students to reflect on their personal vocabulary and presentation skills.
In 2020 we look forward to working more with local and national experts to extend our students learning. I look forward to being part of an extension group programme that will continue to broaden and enrich the learning experiences of our extension group students.
