We are pleased to have completed 2019 with a surplus for the 4th year running. This was more challenging than last year as we have experienced significant roll drop due to the TRC Housing Projects. We are fortunate not to have had any major unplanned expenses. Thanks again to Charlotte for navigating us safely through to the end of another year, with a clean audit and everything accounted for.
The property work we are partnering in with MOE and the associated financial arrangements, continues to take far too long and this is frustrating for Garth, Charlotte and all of us as a school.
We have been trying to get in excess of $1M worth of works signed off for the last 3 years and we are still waiting on some very obvious corrections to be made so that we can move onward.
We are still receiving help from MOE to resolve leaky building issues, but once again this is still a painfully slow process and is still incomplete. At least we are not paying for it any more!
We expected that early this year we would be signing off our 5YA/10YPP and recorded this in this report exactly one year ago.
The items we have identified that we would pay urgent attention to are:
Garth deserves special mention and thanks as he has invested a significant amount of his own time and resource in improving our property and supervising others who do so. Thanks so much Garth!
Once again, Charlotte Sorenson deserves sincere thanks and congratulations for persevering with these challenges and complexities and for supplying comprehensive information to Auditors and our own BOT whenever needed.
Liona our MOE Property Advisor has been transferred sideways inside the MOE organisation and we are now working with Reuben Beaufort. We are grateful t Reuben, but note that this constant changing of MOE Property Advisors is a real contributor to the lack of continuity we experience.
For all that, our property experience has improved and we are in a much better situation than we were four years ago.
Reports to the Board have been informative and timely.
We have had our annual visit from our Auditors (BDO Spicer) and at the time of publication are not aware of any issues.
Pt England School acknowledges and thanks the Manaiakalani Education Trust for financial and resourcing support in the following ways:
We are grateful to have working now with Jennifer Whiley, Tanya Harvey, Kirsty Dowding and Anjila Dixon from the pedagogy side of the Ministry of Education who are supporting to us to drive change to the property and infrastructure side of the Ministry. This has been a huge help and we are now seeing movement on the implementation of the Taāmaki Education Change Plan.
We still have half of a temporary 'Village' on the western end of our school field, which MOE would like us to keep at the moment for "insurance". we are waiting to get the remaining 2 buildings appropriately connected and relocated.
