茂林祈雨祭

茂林部落的鄭家（Kaborna）祖先”Alras”的故事

This is a long lost tradition of the native Taiwanese people. The story goes that…in the 茂林 tribe, there lived the 鄭 family and the 王家, also known as Kaborna and Kavenga; every year around April and May, the lack of rain and the boiling humid weather in Taiwan causes all the crops to dry up and die. At times like this, the ancestors of the Wang family, known as Cacmake, will climb up the trees and yell out their prayers. In the meantime, the villagers are told not to go into the mountains, cut down trees, mow, and burn fire on this day. On the second day, the tribe will send a few men to find really thick vines to make into a swing on a 茄冬樹; which is also where the water source was located.

That night, the ancestor of the Zheng family will come to the tree without anyone knowing to swing on the swing with a bucket in hand. The bucket is filled with water and the leaves of the 茄冬樹. He dapped the leaves in the water and threw them in front of himself, murmuring the prayers, asking for rain. The next morning, the Wang family again climbed onto the tree, gathering everyone around the river to have fun in the water. It was at this moment that rain finally fell, giving life to all the crops again.

The tradition asks that everyone stop starting fires outside for cooking and consuming salt a few days prior to the event. A day before the event, all fire-starting materials were to be put outside of your house, and pregnant women were to stay home. Not every family can conduct this tradition, only a few designated families, one of which is the Zheng family now. Similar to the story, men were to go harvest for wood and vines to construct the swings and make some fishing tools. This is a two-day festival. The first stage of this prayer: the priest will go to the swing alone and speak the prayers at 3-4 o’clock in the middle of the night. The second stage happens at 10 o’clock in the morning until the afternoon. Everyone was expected to go to the river, splash the water and have a ‘water war’. After everyone’s clothes were soaked, they were to catch some fish; these fish were then evenly split amongst everyone in the tribe. This tradition is then over.

German legend

• A family living in the forest gathering and having dinner on christmas eve; they heard wailing outside, thinking it is the cold stormy weather they continued eating. After a while they realized it must be something else. It was a helpless beggar. They took him in and took care of him. Later the beggar revealed his identity to be Christ’s child, while showing the halo on his head. After he left, 2 white chrysanthemums were found in front of their house.

• Emperor then sent these men and women with golden chrysanthemums to trade for the magic herbs when they find it

• These men and women found no magic herbs but cultivated a land of chrysanthemum

This installation is inspired by the tale of Narcissus.

• We were initially thinking about our minds and thoughts as a sanctuary, or safe space for oneself. This led us to the story of Narcissus since he was so absorbed in his own thoughts that he fell into the water - or fell in love.

• The reflective bowl and the water is not only to represent the water but also the fact that this distorted image of oneself will drag you into yourself even more - forcing you into this sanctuary space.

• The tubes one the side are to represent previous people who also stumble upon this water and fell in, then turned into flower - like Narcissus. Each containing different tinctures from our own replicated scent kits.

• These tubes also forces one to kneel down to smell and interact with the piece / water.

• The sound piece is someone (my friend) humming a song without any background music. This is played softly in the background, creating an atmosphere of someone singing alone in the forest or in the shower while he/she is so caught up in their thoughts.

• The water also makes sounds when touched. This is to represent that as one reaches towards themselves while getting more and more absorbed into it, it creates more sounds, completely dragging them into this mental world.
