XINLU LIU

Inspired by the rain, this project features droplets made of citrus peels. The hand-made ceramic bowl holds water infused with grapefruit and lemon aroma. A small diffuser brings the scent into the air and creates a mist in the refreshing citrus rain.

Each city has its own character. NYC is a hot melting pot. A variety of flowers bloom in this box. Each stand for a unique soul in NYC. The box is scented with floral notes, smoke nots, etc., offering a complex and fascinating experience of navigating in the city.

Night time in the forest is alway mysterious. The light and shadows of the trees and the crackling sound stepping on fallen leaves bring the excitement and fear. This project is a lighting installation with a ceramic tray in the shape of mushroom holding a candle on the bottom and a dome covered with all kinds of leaves at top. The earthy aroma comes from the leaves and the smoky scent from the burning of the candle. The quivering flame adds motion and mystery to the experience.

A mask can be hard, soft, fearsome, or intimate. It becomes part of the person when being worn. This is a silk mask brings an airiness to the user. It is a decoration as well as a portable diffuser. The cloth is infused with a sweet floral scent made with tinctures of strawberry, citrus, and lavender, capturing the mid-summer freshness and energy.

Inspired by the Greek Mythology, this ceramic headdress is designed to capture the beauty, brightness, and strength of the soul of a modern Artemis. It is scented with wood notes and skin notes, with a light touch of floral. The accord has the weight as featuring the mythological figure and the mist that brings people closer to the wearer.

Inspired by the Japanese landscape art, this is an interactive ceramic installation that invites people to tap and make sound. It is a meditation of sound, light, and aroma. The incense stick brings a woody and smoky scent and a serenity to people around.

The ceramic vase holds the emotions of admiration and longings. It is a configuration of and love scented with a resinous and floral accord, giving the atmosphere of surreal and poetic beauty.

Inspired by the tea ceremony, this pair of teapots features a conversation between people. They feature a feminine beauty of curvatures and a humble yet confident character. The scent is a natural black tea note blended with light floral and woody notes of rose and cider, and an extra touch of sweetness from maple.

This is a physical configuration of my spiritual sanctuary. Working with slip-casting ceramic pieces, cork blocks and felt stripes, I construct a world that I would travel in my mind. Some of the ceramic pieces are broken while they symbolizes a reviving and unbeatable creativity. The installation has dark woods scent and a light note of decaying rose, both trying to capture the rebirth of plants in nature.

Infusing all natural materials around me in alcohol, I experiment and replicate the scents in my imagination. Ranging from orange peal to dried lavender to pine cones and branches, I smell and mix the notes.
