Our altar project is about the ceremony of honoring Tong Bin, the Kiln God. The government is claimed to have ordered a large cylinder with blue dragon designs from the official ceramics manufacture sometime about 1599. The fact that the artisans were failing was extraordinarily large. They were treated like slaves while already working for minimal money. Tong Bin gave his life by jumping into the kiln fire in defiance of the hegemony. The cylinder was successfully ignited the very following day. He then evolved into the Kiln God. Candles and couplets with phrases to ask for luck from the Kiln God are often present during the rite, where participants kneel and pray.
