Pitkin Leaves has been launched in response to the State of Colorado’s Family and Medical Leave Insurance Program (FAMLI) and is an expansion and/or replacement of the County’s Short-Term Disability, FMLA, and Parental Leave program.
Employees are eligible for Pitkin Leaves after 6 months of service and 625 hours worked in the 6 months directly leading up to the leave event. Pitkin Leaves provides employees up to 12 weeks (480 hours) of leave within a 12-month rolling calendar.
Employees may use Pitkin Leaves to take time away from work in order to:
• Care for a new child, including adopted and fostered children (parental leave)
• Care for themselves, if they have a serious health condition (self care leave)
• Care for a family member’s serious health condition (caregiver leave)
• Make arrangements for a family member’s military deployment (military leave)
• Address the immediate safety needs and impact of domestic violence and/or sexual assault. (self care and/or caregiver leave)
• Twenty-six workweeks of leave during a single 12-month period to care for a covered service member with a serious injury or illness if the eligible employee is the servicemember’s spouse, child, parent, or next of kin (military caregiver leave).
Comparison of Pitkin Leaves with FAMLI, FMLA, and Short-Term Disability (STD).
Pitkin Leaves will run concurrently with FMLA for employees with 12 months or more of services to the County.
Employees with 6 to 12 months of service will see the same benefits supported by internal policy.
There is a 10-day (80 hour) waiting period where employees may use PTO, MSL, or unpaid leave. This is reduced from the 14-day waiting period for STD.
Total leave is 560 hours or 80 hours waiting period and 480 hours of Pitkin Leaves.
Pitkin Leaves does not affect Long-Term Disability.
Short-term disability and parental leave will be replaced with Pitkin Leaves in Executime.

Colorado Family Medical Leave Insurance Program (FAMLI)
Colorado Family Medical Leave Insurance Program FAMLI affects local government employers differently than private businesses. Local government employers have the option to vote to opt out of the FAMLI program. The Pitkin County BOCC voted to opt out of FAMLI on 12/6/2022 and to increase the County’s paid leave program with the creation of Pitkin Leaves.
● Employees still have the option of self-selecting FAMLI coverage if their local government employer opted out.
● Employees who want to participate must register in My FAMLI+ Employer like an independent contractor to commit to participating in the program for three years. These employees are responsible for self-reporting their wage data and remitting their quarterly premiums into the system.
● Local government employers that vote to decline participation in the FAMLI program are not required to have an equivalent paid leave plan in place.
