Risk Management at Pitkin County is the process of identifying, evaluating, and controlling risks that could prevent the County from achieving its goals while protecting our employees, residents, assets, and financial resources. The program is proactive rather than reactive, integrated into every department, and built to support informed decision-making, reduce the total cost of risk, and protect the County's people, assets, and mission.
Our core functions include protecting people through employee safety, workers' compensation, wellness, and injury prevention programs. We protect County assets such as property, vehicles, infrastructure, equipment, and natural resources. We protect financial resources through insurance, claims management, budgeting, and efforts to reduce the total cost of risk. This includes evaluating, purchasing, and managing insurance policies to protect the County from significant property, liability, cyber, workers' compensation, and other exposures, while determining when it is more cost-effective for the County to retain or self-insure risk.
We protect the organization through contract review, appropriate insurance and risk-transfer requirements, liability reduction, compliance, and enterprise risk management. We also support County operations by partnering with departments to identify risks, evaluate available options, and develop practical solutions that keep projects and services moving forward safely.
