GROUP ARTIST STATEMENT:

The collage of the White-crowned Sparrow is meant to reflect how much learning and effort goes into the study of birds, and see the beauty of that effort reflected in our artwork. We want our audience to better understand that people and nature are one whole, strengthening the connections between us and the natural world.

For this project, we used paper, drawings, and magazines all connected with glue, as well as individual creative contributions from each group member. When it came to decision making we typically tried to have collaborative input, tossing out ideas and seeing what stuck. Our project revolves around the White-crowned Sparrow, as this was the bird that our Little Bird Lab scientist, Olivia, was working most closely with.The main element of our process that best describes our thesis was when we combined our own elements to collage an anatomic drawing of the White-crowned Sparrow, reflecting how scientists collaborate.

Being able to collectively work together as a group, we were able to find what we have in common and what our individual strengths are. Because we all worked on our own individual, smaller project, we were able to incorporate these strengths into one collective final product. The collage we made perfectly fit our creative strengths and we were able to collaboratively come together to put to light the ongoing climate crisis that affects not only the white-crowned sparrow, but also the environment around us.
