With this project, we intend to show that nature is for all, not just suburbanites bulldozing ever more land to enable green lawns or the middle class, who will drive their lard-barge to a paved campground producing carbon dioxide along the way. We feel that we often fall into ttrap of thinking that the places we live are fundamentally wrong because of our disconnect from nature. We want to show how this misconception is incorrect, that our cities are inseparable from nature, and thus any experience that can be had in the traditional sense of nature can also be had on one’s commute home, or going to the shops, or even just looking out one's apartment window, provided that one is willing to look.
In this project, we intended to capture a similar process to what would be used in scientific fields. In this way, we believe that our project is representative of an experience observing nature in the urban environment. Over three days and twenty hours of observation, we amassed numerous bird sightings and documented them as both photographs and videos. In our project, one can observe a hand-picked collection of these videos. In this way, we show how one need not travel outside of the city limits to see nature, such as what we observed.
Throughout the creation of this project, we kept coming back to the idea of coexisting, that in fact, the idea of unspoiled nature may just be around the corner, and that in all parts of our lives. To see this, one must only be willing to look.
QUICK BIO FOR EACH GROUP MEMBER
Koebie Campos- During this process, I was helping my team with ideas and brainstorming what we were going to do and how we were going to execute. While in the early stages we had talked about birds tress and trains, and I had the idea of coexistence when talking to Sarah about what we would be focusing on during this project, it felt really put together. Norman had the idea to film the project while we would walk around Portland or anywhere in the area, and capture nature and wildlife coexisting or just being there while a person walks to work, running for the bus. While walking, I was tasked like my group members to walk around and photograph or video any type of wildlife and people interacting together.
Tomás Martinez-Nauman-
In this project, I was able to showcase my experience with photography and share ideas found in my field of study, Urban Planning. The mindset that I was utilizing while completing this assignment was the idea of space and place, that us as humans often see our lives as places that should be filled, whether that is through paintings on a wall or buildings in a city. Despite this aspiration, there are still blank walls left behind. In this project, I believe that we were able to stop and observe the gaps that our city leaves behind, rarely seen.
Norman Moore-
During the process of the project, I convinced my team to create a film. A portion of our video was taken downtown which I took videos with Tomás; I also did all the editing.
