Group Artist Statement

In our group’s project, titled “birb mixtape” we were able to bring together our different music tastes and create a diverse collective of songs that relate to birds in any sort of way. Whether it was lyricism, visuals, and or auditory aspects, we wanted to make the relation as broad as possible. Together, we explored themes of songbirds and the many diverse voices of birds that have an unknowingly prominent presence within our everyday lives. 

We utilized Canva as an artistic and collaborative tool when creating the visual aspects of our mixtape such as the lyric book and cover. Later, our playlist was burned onto a physical CD. Olivia; the resident scientist at the Little Bird Lab and who we interviewed, primarily researched the habits of songbirds. We discovered we are like songbirds in our own ways, as they have their own songs and characteristics like we have individual music preferences and personalities. Working together meant bouncing off creative ideas and brainstorming better, and communicating clearly when obstacles arose.

Through combining different music genres to create our mixtape, we learned about each other's music and visual tastes, helping us better connect. Working alone wouldn't have given us the insight of multiple diverse personalities and perspectives, which would have led to a rather homogeneous mixtape. Most people probably don't think much about seeing birds every day or how they can affect them, ideas like these, however, can give people more insight into how much humans change the world around them absentmindedly.
