GROUP ARTIST STATEMENT

One thing in this project that stood out to me was the lack of shelter for birds on campus. As we walked around campus for our bird findings I noticed that there weren't any bird baths or bird houses which seems surprising as on our campus there are many birds. As a result, my group and I decided that we could create a nest that catered to Black-capped chickadee birds that don't migrate during the winter. We used chipboard and wood that were in a similar tone to the environment of Portland State University. Designing a nest from scratch that accommodates the native birds here in Portland really helps make a distinct connection between art and science being used together to help our community. We think that due to how the world is drastically changing everyday we should cater to those that get impacted the most from fish all the way to birds.  As we were brainstorming our ideas for what type of nest we wanted to build, we saw a massive bird house “ Tree House Bird Apartment by Nendo” . This house was our inspiration for our project. The house consists of 78 nesting places for birds which is something we wanted to base our project on but on a smaller scale. Making this project has made us acknowledge the different types of climates birds live in and how much impact we could help create in just developing nests that accommodate those climate conditions to help these birds thrive.
