Our group, inspired by Jamie Cornelius’s approach to science, made a diorama inside of a broken guitar that Piper found in the park blocks about a month ago. We wanted to lean into the more creative side of science that we’d been introduced to in the past two terms. We wondered how we could display this idea in a physical form, and after lots of thinking, we landed on making our diorama. We thought it would be interesting to flip the script and have a bird study humans. This new perspective has been so much fun to explore. 

     Using lots of cardboard, hot glue, paint markers, and clay, we worked together to fill the inside of this bird’s ‘house.’ Our group came to agreements on furniture styles, color choices, and who was making what as we went along. We were inspired not only by Jamie, but also the music of Ken and Sam Lee. Science has historically been looked at as such a sterile, almost robotic line of work, and we loved how Jamie, Ken, and Sam have taken such a down-to-earth, human approach to their science. 

     This project showed our group how well we can work together when we’re all equally excited about something. None of us anticipated getting so deep into this project. Though, the more we worked on it, the more excited we became. We hope that our viewers will be able to see the care and joy that went into this project, and that maybe they’ll leave with a new idea of how creative science can really be.
