ARTIST STATEMENT:
When I was first asked on what I was going to do for my own Little Bird Lab project, my answer came almost immediately; a map. It wasn't really born of any high desire or ambition I had in mind, but rather practicality. It was an optimal compromise of what I felt I could feasibly tackle as a solo group while wrestling with the work of my other classes. However, this is not to say - in any part - that I perceive cartography as a lesser means of undertaking a creative project. To the contrary, I have always been infatuated with mapping and learning about geography as a whole.
At its core, this project was created to display the vast and diverse year-round ranges of ten vastly different bird species, all of which can be found here; in Portland. I believe that showing such a display can help us to better understand the adaptability and endurance of these birds while showing the geographic features that create these ranges in the first place.
