This year, Turner Fenton HOSA will offer four team events for chapter members to explore: Community Awareness, Creative Problem Solving, Public Health, and Medical Innovation.
Have you ever noticed a prevalent health/safety issue in your community? Whether that be a lack of hospitals limiting access to healthcare, or insufficient mental health resources. Issues as such can affect communities greatly, and a push for change will only resolve the matter. If you are someone who wants to actively make a change in your community this event is for you!
Community Awareness is a group event in which participants in groups of 2-4 have the opportunity to educate members of their community on one health or safety issue that affects them. Participants are required to create a community campaign surrounding their issue and keeping track of documents and images as proof of such. These documents will then be used to create a portfolio of their accomplishments through the campaign and a report to summarize such. At SLC, participants will receive 5 minutes to present their campaign goals and reports to judges.
This event is geared for those who are better at writing, presenting, setting goals, creating and executing plans. Community Awareness is an opportunity for you to create an action plan to help your community. You will spend time with your group outlining methods and events that can be done to help raise awareness. If you are someone who is determined and a logistical thinker, this event is for you!
This event encourages HOSA members to analyze the problem solving process and to work as a team to apply their problem solving skills in creating a solution to a hypothetical health or HOSA-related problem. For this event, students will compete in teams of three or four.
Round One
The first round will be a 60-minute multiple choice test with 50 questions relating to the concepts learnt from the resources provided beforehand. For teams to qualify for the next round, they must have a high average test score, meaning that they all must do well on the test.
The marking breakdown for Round One will go as follows:
Creative Thinking - 30%
Problem Solving Strategies & Skills- 10%
Problem Identification - 10%
Clarification of Problems/Developing Objectives - 15%
Examining Constraints/Developing Alternatives - 15%
Generating Ideas & Solutions/Deciding a Course of Action - 10%
Sharing Decisions/Troubleshooting/Implementation - 10%
Round Two
Teams that qualify for round two will be given a problem-solving question based on a secret topic. Teams will have 30 minutes before their presentation time to prepare their solution along with any visuals that they would like to present. Then, they will have 8 minutes to present their solution. It is necessary that each team member is active in the presentation. Teams will be assessed using a Rating Sheet which can be found in the HOSA Event Guidelines.
In the wake of the pandemic, we have seen a lot of uninformed individuals making some dangerous decisions.People walking around maskless and some even refusing to wash their hands! In those instances, have you ever felt the need to educate individuals like them? Did you ever want to help educate the public about topics that not only affect their safety but the general publics as well? Are you someone who is creative and is comfortable speaking to a group of people?
Well Public Health is the event for you! Public Health is a group event in which participants in groups of 2-6 create an effective, dynamic and creative presentation surrounding a public health issue. Participants are then required to present their presentation to members of their community and present proof to SLC judges. At SLC, the event is split into 2 rounds. The first round is a 4 minute presentation to convince and ‘wow’ the judges to watch your full presentation. If successful participants will move on to the second round in which, the same 9 minute presentation the team presented to their community members which will be presented to the SLC judges.
This event is surely not one to miss as it allows you to become informed on relevant topics affecting your community. You even get to help resolve this issue by raising awareness of this topic and are actively making a change to help with the issue. If you want to make a difference in your community and advocate for healthcare disparities, this event is the one for you.
Medical Innovation is meant to encourage students to create original (MO) medical innovations that could have a severe and dramatic impact on medicine in the near future. This event includes improved medical technology, innovative products, devices, medical apps and other inventions and findings that may influence global health care.
Procedure:
Students will compete in this event in groups of 2-4 for this event. For both events, students will be required to submit a 60-second video showing their innovation to STEM Premiere at a specific date before competing. At the competition, students will compete in two rounds. In the first round, teams will have limited time to assemble their innovation, which can include art and graphics. Then, judges will assess the innovation without competitors present. If students advance to the second round, they will do a 7-minute oral presentation. Judges will use a rating sheet to assess all presentations, which is available in the HOSA Event Guidelines.
