Every year, nearly 400 students apply to join Turner Fenton HOSA as a general member. In order to provide the best experience and the best value to all of our members, approximately 100 candidates will be accepted (approximately 25 students per grade).
Due to the wide variety of competitive HOSA events, the admission process will take into account the different skills needed for each type of event. There will be multiple stages in the process, as detailed below.
To join the Turner Fenton HOSA chapter, applicants must undergo a rigorous two-stage process, from which the best applicants compete for the Turner Fenton chapter at the national and international level. From over 400 applicants the top 100 fiercest candidates are chosen to be part of the chapter and compete at nationals and internationals.
Admissions are determined by executive members, who are chosen by the teacher supervisors. If there are any questions, concerns or desire to receive constructive feedback for admissions please use the contact information to get in touch with the higher executives or teachers.
The general admission process for Turner Fenton HOSA is a two-part system to ensure scores and individual characteristics can be holistically evaluated.
The first stage of the application process is an online google form encompassing of a variety of questions that revolve around creative thinking, problem solving as well as scientific and technical innovation. The primary objective of the first stage of the application process is to examine the critical thinking skills and creative problem solving approach, which are useful skills for HOSA competitions. This application stage will condense applicant numbers from 400 to 200. The top 200 candidates will move onto stage 2 of the application.
This application can now be found here.
Every potential candidate for our HOSA 2020-2021 chapter must go through this first stage process
Applicants will be asked which event they would potentially want to be a part of (for estimation purposes)
This is not final and can be changed if the candidate makes it to stage 2 of the selection process
The second stage of the application process will consist of a multiple choice entrance exam (submitted online). If candidates are successful in making it to stage 2 of testing, they will get to choose which event they want to be a part of and write its corresponding exam.
The dates of the exams are TBD
Exams will be monitored by the Executive Team, Education Team, and the teacher advisers
Knowledge exams will be based off of a specific section of the respective HOSA textbook. All second-stage candidates will be given the material from the chapter to study and prepare for the exam. Most exams will be in a multiple choice format to be completed online.
All candidates who wish to participate in a knowledge event must be present at the exam.
Events with knowledge exams include: DS - Dental Science, MM - Medical Math, MT - Medical Terminology, KB - Behavioral Health, KN - Nutrition and EP - Epidemiology.
In order to best emulate the competitive setting, practical testing will be broken down into two sections: written and practical demonstration. Candidates will be chosen through the combination of scores on both these subject areas.
The process for written testing will be the same as that for knowledge events. Coordinators will pick one chapter from their HOSA online textbook that the exam will be based on. The candidates will be given the material from the chapter to study and prepare for the exam.
For the practical component, practical event coordinators will pick one skill from their event that the candidates must learn about and explain how to conduct thoroughly in their written exam. This will work as a long answer question that should be worth the same amount of marks as the first portion of their written exam.
Group event coordinators have a bit of a different selection process. Candidates will be selected individually, and groups will be formed later on from the chapter members that have been chosen.
The selection process will constitute a mini-case study for groups that are selected at random. For example, if there are 30 candidates, there will be 6 groups of five candidates that will be randomly chosen, and each group will have to complete the same type of mini case study task. The mini case study will be related to the group event; for Public Health, the assigned topic could be health safety in our schools.
Each group will be given 20 minutes to prepare a 5 minute presentation where each member speaks for roughly a minute. Group training coordinators would get to judge candidates based on their presentation skills, collaboration and overall potential.
The online application score and the second-round score will be combined to give each candidate a total score out of 200. From these tabulated scores, the top 100 candidates will be admitted into the TFSS HOSA Chapter. Equal opportunity will be guaranteed for all grade levels.
