LESSON PLAN
Biomedical Laboratory Science provides members of Turner Fenton HOSA opportunities to explore the knowledge and skills needed for health sciences within a biomedical laboratory setting. It incorporates aspects of both Chemistry and Biology and acts as a fun application of these subjects. The event is broken down into two parts, the Knowledge Exam and the Practical Event.
The Knowledge Exam will allow for members to compete in a formal, written exam which covers various topics explored throughout the course of the chapter. Sixty minutes will be given to complete fifty multiple choice questions, which will be used to assess their strength of knowledge of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences.
The Practical Event is the second round of the overall event, held for those who qualify with top scores in the Knowledge Exam. This round will assess the practical skills of chapter members by placing them within a simulated laboratory setting to perform skills taught throughout the chapter at random.
Biomedical Laboratory Sciences (BT) is a practical event that consists of two rounds. The first round is a written test consisting of 50 multiple choice questions. The breakdown of the knowledge event is shown below.
Biotechnology Industry, Equipment and Products - 10%
Raw Materials of Biotechnology - 8%
Lab Safety and Infection Control - 10%
DNA Structure and Function - 8%
Proteins and Enzymes - 10%
Genetic Engineering - 8%
Biotechnology in Health - 10%
DNA Synthesis, Sequencing and Genomics - 8%
Clinical Chemistry - 8%
Hematology and Serology - 10%
Careers in Medical Lab and Biotechnology - 10%
Depending on a candidate’s performance in the written exam, they may qualify for the second round → the practical round. The skills that may be tested in this round can be found below.
Skill I: Identifying Laboratory Instruments/Equipment (Including name of instrument/equipment and purpose or use.) - 15 Minutes
Skill II: Infection control and transmission-based precautions - 5 Minutes
Skill III: Inoculate and streak an agar plate - 5 Minutes
Skill IV: Using a microscope - 10 Minutes
Skill V: ABO Grouping - 6 Minutes
Skill VI: Gram Stain - 7 Minutes
Skill VII: Preparing a Laboratory Solution - 7 Minutes
