chatOAME (the AI chat service for OAME members) is powered in the background by OpenAI's API (not ChatGPT, so our chats are not stored by OpenAI for their own use). That's our only use of AI in chatOAME --- other aspects of chatOAME are done by algorithms (just like regular apps like Excel or your students' EQAO coding problems). In regular ChatGPT, if you ask for a Word document, it uses more AI to create a "Word document program" and then runs that program to make the document and then throws the program away afterwards. That's a waste of AI, a waste of energy and an environmental black mark we're not willing to make.
Our Word documents, GoogleDocs, PowerPoints, GoogleForms, Microsoft Forms, Wayground, diagrams and graphs are all done by algorithms, NOT energy-wasteful AI. We want to make sure that the choices we make are environmentally appropriate. We want to use AI responsibly, and let OAME members be confident that their use of chatOAME isn't unnecessarily wasteful.
The Ron Lancaster (definitely the correct use of the definite article) created his first Math Trail on Toronto’s Centre Island in the summer of 1985 for teachers enrolled in an Additional Qualifications course. The suggestion to visit Centre Island came from Al Fleming, a mathematics teacher who had a tradition of taking the last class of his AQ courses there. In the early 1990s, he began creating trails for teachers attending the Anja S. Greer Conference on Mathematics and Technology in Exeter, New Hampshire, developing these trails with Vince Delisi, a mathematics teacher in Toronto.
The first trail he created for Ontario school students took place in Toronto’s financial district. The students loved the active nature of the project and enjoyed working collaboratively with their classmates. Since then, he has created Math Trails for students, teachers, parents, and the general public in cities across Canada, the US, and internationally, where thousands of students and hundreds of teachers have enjoyed these walks with him.
There's a great online resource for Math Trails at mathcitymap.eu but right now, only British Columbia is representing Canada!
A lot of Ontario educators have joined Ron at OAME conferences over the past few decades as he led us on Math Trails around each city hosting the OAME conference, so we hope you'll spend a few minutes sharing your Math Trail around Ontario. Not only will you share your innovation like Ron, educators from around the world can use it as a resource to do a digital walk through our neighbourhoods and get a glimpse at how beautiful and mathematical Ontario is!
Since OAME'27 will be a virtual conference, this will be a great way to have a virtual walk (or two) to go on throughout the conference between session.
Need convincing? We're going to track any complete Math Trail added to the database for Ontario from today to April 1st, then award an educator on that list a $25 gift certificate.

This webinar will feature Sophie Tyrrel & Michele Goveia on Nov 11th : "ELLs Can Do Math! Supporting & Celebrating ELLs in the Intermediate Division Gr. 7-10" More info is at talks.oame.on.ca/season-9
"Taking a student that some people will have deficit thinking about and seeing exactly what they can do like having students scoring level 3 or high level 2 on EQAO and they are ESL students so you think ... hmm, they absolutely can do math..."
What is OAMEtalks? It's a place to hear the voices from the OAME conference! The main part will be in the form of webinar versions of some of the popular sessions from the previous year's conference. These webinars will be available exclusively to OAME members only. They will be available live (mostly) on the second Wednesday of the month and then will be archived and available from the OAME website.
Registration for this, and all webinars, at https://oame.on.ca/mcis/
The other part will be in the form of a podcast. This podcast will be a short conversation with each of our webinar presenters to get a preview of what their session will be about. The podcasts will be available to the general public on the https://talks.oame.on.ca/ pages and through iTunes and Google Play.
Recordings available through https://oame.on.ca/mcis/ :
Wed Sept. 9th: Erick Lee - Bigger on the Inside: The Surprising Power of Short Math Routines
Wed Oct 14th: Kendra Kozlowski and Anne-Marie Painter - Playful Pathways: Game-Based Math Learning for Junior Students Across Algebra and Spatial Reasoning
Intuition, a stainless steel sculpture created by British sculptor John Robinson in 1997 sits outside the Fields Institute. An angular, three-dimensional representation of the Borromean rings, composed of three interwoven equilateral triangles where removing any single triangle causes the remaining two to separate, the sculpture was presented to the Fields Institute in 1997 to honor the 90th birthday of renowned geometer Donald Coxeter.
The November focus at the Fields Math Ed Forum (just next to Univeristy of Toronto or online!) is Mathematical Promise and Mathematician’s Delights. The forum will be taking place on November 28 from 10am - 2pm. The forum asks: How might schools and intentional mathematical communities cultivate the conditions in which mathematical promise comes into view. How do we identify and nurture learners with strong mathematical promise? Forum participants will take up this question by exploring delight as one way mathematical promise comes into view. Those interested can participate in person or online. For more information and to register, please visit www.fields.utoronto.ca/activities/26-27/meforum-Nov

Keep an eye out for your local OAME chapter virtual watch party to connect with your local math community during the event!
Mark your calendars for next summer! BTC27 Canada is coming to Toronto for a three-day Building Thinking Classrooms event bringing educators together to learn, collaborate, and celebrate thinking classrooms.
Hosted by SWOAME and ISOMA (chapters of OAME), BTC27 Canada will welcome Dr. Peter Liljedahl, featured speakers, and presentations from educators (maybe you?) from across teaching subjects and roles. The conference will highlight the uniqueness of Canadian classrooms while bringing diverse voices together to deepen and extend the Building Thinking Classrooms conversation.
The pre-conference and conference will take place at Havergal College from Sunday, August 22 to Tuesday, August 24, 2027, with evening social activities also being planned.
Save the date and spread the word! More information about registration, speaker proposals, travel, and accommodations is coming soon.
