The NCTM's JRME journal has a new editor, Lani Horn, who has been a frequent speaker at OAME. Lani wrote a provocative, and hopeful, opening editorial for the journal and (unlike the rest of the journal) it was published open-access: Mathematics Education at the End of the World. Take a moment to read it (only 4 pages!), reflect on its implications for our current and future experiences, and feel the lift from the hope she engenders in the closing. Remember you can always touch base with us at oamenews@oame.on.ca
For anyone new to the acronym, NCTM (the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) is the world’s largest mathematics education organization, providing vision and leadership through research, publications, and professional learning. OAME is an NCTM affiliate, which helps connect Ontario educators to that wider network and strengthens the two-way exchange of ideas.
Registration is open for the OAME2026 conference (see below!) and you can get a preview of the keynotes, featured speakers and more in these latest episodes of the OAMEtalks podcast. Listen to all three episodes at the link below or on your favourite podcasting app.

Following a workshop delivered at the Science Teachers' Assotiaion of Ontario (STAO) conference, OAME Director 7-12, Michael Frankfort, explored how intentional, student-focused supports can transform the classroom experience for students with exceptionalities. By highlighting that learning disabilities reflect differences in information processing rather than intellectual capacity, Michael emphasized the necessity of purposeful scaffolding within both Ontario’s Elementary Science and Mathematics curricula. A central feature of the session was the utility of SciTechOntario, a free, collaborative resource developed by STAO, OCTE, and ACSE. By leveraging Universal Design for Learning (UDL), the resource helps students with LDs through:
Hands-on tasks that make abstract numerical concepts tangible;
Visual supports to reduce the cognitive load on working memory;
Multiple ways to demonstrate understanding, moving beyond traditional written output.
Michael showed how educators ensured that all students felt reflected in their learning. For more information, please check out the SciTechOntario website as well as Michael’s recent STAO Blog post, Learning Together Again.
chatOAME now will show full math equations in GoogleDocs without any plugins or extensions!
You can either get your full conversation by clicking the Create Google Doc button at the bottom of the screen then clicking Open Google Doc when it's ready, or, if you mouse over any reply or prompt, the upper right corner will show a popup - click the G and a Google Doc of just that section will open in a new window.
Word documents (either the button at the bottom of the screen or the W on any reply or prompt) will also show mathematics correctly in Equation Editor.
Any other suggestions? Let the OAME AI project know: oame.ai@oame.on.ca
chatOAME uses a THINKING engine so it may take a little longer than AIs that reply in fast mode; we hope you'll find it's worth the wait!
The OAME2026 Annual Conference is now open for registration! Join us at Fanshawe College in London on April 30 and May 1, 2026. This year’s theme, “Let’s Talk Math” puts student thinking (and teacher learning!) right in the conversation.
It’s a hybrid conference, with both in-person and virtual options — so you can join the dialogue from wherever you are.
