For educators looking to dive deeper on universal design in mathematics, TEAMS (Toronto Educators Association for Mathematics) will be hosting a book study of the book, Rethinking Disability and Mathematics, A UDL Math Classroom Guide for Grade K-8 by Dr. Rachel Lambert. All educators and teacher candidates are welcome to participate! The book study dates are January 23, February 27, March 24 and April 24.
For convenience, registrants are responsible for ordering their own copy of the book, but TEAMS members who attend at least two sessions will be provided a stipend to assist with the cost of the book. Upon registration through http://oame.on.ca/mcis, registrants will receive an email with a discount code from the publisher (Corwin). Registration is complimentary for both OAME members and non-members. Registration is now open and will close Friday, January 22.

NWOAME (Northwestern Ontario Association for Mathematics Education) is hosting a free online Math Night with Lynda Colgan on Thursday, January 23rd, 7:00 – 8:00 P.M.
Using examples drawn from early primary division classrooms, this interactive session will focus on lessons learned through observations of students field-testing tasks for The Roots of Coding, a set of resources available on https://earlymath.ca/
Elementary school geometry has two distinct components: shape and space. It is the latter, i.e., how objects relate to one another and to our own bodies with respect to position, location and direction that is at the core of early coding. As educators, it is our role to guide young learners’ mathematization of their intuitive understandings of space. By tasking children with carefully selected problems to solve kinesthetically, and by modelling the use of accurate mathematical language and appropriate representations, we can extend what young learners already know about space, setting the stage for curriculum-based coding expectations. The last square year, using (45 - 1) x (45 - 1), was 89 years ago. The next square year, using (45 + 1) x (45 + 1) is 91 years away. For many of us, this square year is a once in a lifetime event. Happy nerd-vana!
Nerd Squared !!
45 = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9, so
2025 = (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9) ^2
Nerd Cubed !!!
2025 = 1^3 + 2^3 + 3^3 + 4^3 + 5^3 + 6^3 + 7^3 + 8^3 + 9^3
Besides reading the Ontario Mathematics Gazette and exploring its archive (in the members-only area), you can actively engage the Gazette. Consider volunteering to review articles - there is no obligation, but you will receive notices of reviewing needs and can offer to if you are willing. We could use a person to generate interesting fill pieces, cartoons, and puzzles. Perhaps draft a math poem? Writing book reviews was mentioned in the last newsletter. Consider writing an article (perhaps a new-years resolution?) to share some aspect of your teaching practices.
You are welcome to discuss ideas with the edtior (gazette -at- oame.on.ca). But remember, it is your Gazette and you are always welcome to help craft what is in the pages.

Have you tried out chatOAME, the AI Agent built for OAME members? The next two months is the time to try! OpenAI (the makers of ChatGPT and who provides the AI Engine of chatOAME) are giving OAME 11,000,000 free tokens every day to use until Feb 28th! (That's about 8 million words of text... or about 50,000 prompts) So prompt away!
chatOAME is always free to all OAME members but thanks to this offer from OpenAI, OAME doesn't have to pay for any of the AI processing!

SAME (Scarborough Association for Mathematics Education) teamed up with David Costello in a book study to learn more about different types of problems educators can share with students. His book "Messing around with Math" offers a variety of math problems across the grades and strands. You may have missed the book study, but can always find out more at https://costellomath.com/
