The Count Me In Conference brings together educators, researchers, community partners, and mathematics education leaders to explore innovative approaches to teaching and learning mathematics. This year's conference will feature sessions focused on reducing math anxiety, promoting equity and accessibility, fostering mathematical thinking, supporting active and play-based learning, and strengthening professional learning communities. Sept 12 at the University of Toronto there will be a (free) full day Quantum Science workshop for teachers. We've been living through a quantum revolution for the past century so this is a great opportunity to connect with Canada's quantum centres of excellence and discover freely available teaching resources that will bring you and your students into a future we're rapidly approaching. 

Note: the material during the sessions will be aimed at a high-school level, but elements may be appropriate for other grades. Keen elementary and post-secondary educators are welcome to attend.

This workshop is offered to teachers, free of charge, ahead of the 2026 Quantum Science and Engineering Education Conference (QSEEC26), which is part of IEEE Quantum Week 2026. 

(6 min video): University of Toronto mathematician Jacob Tsimerman has received the 2026 Fields Medal, one of the world’s most prestigious honours in mathematics. He is the first mathematician based at a Canadian institution, and only the second Canadian, after Hamilton's Manjul Bhargava (now at Princeton), to win the award. Recognized for groundbreaking work in algebraic geometry and number theory, Tsimerman also emphasizes the importance of collaboration in mathematical discovery: "one of my favorite ways of working is to call up somebody ...and just go on like a 2-3 hour walk; throw ideas around." His Nobel-level achievement offers a great start-of-school opportunity to inspire students by highlighting Canadian excellence, creativity, and teamwork in mathematics.

From our friends at STAO: Looking back through the entries this year, the sheer variety of what we explored together is just amazing. We dove into critical data with the Climate Change Education Survey from Learning for a Sustainable Future, marked milestones like the National Day of Learning with Let’s Talk Science, and had some fun celebrating Pi Day. One of my absolute favourite parts of the blog this year was our Career Showcase series, which brought real-world STEM inspiration right to our fingertips. We got to learn from the incredible journeys of professionals like Christopher Yan (RMT), Brendon Samuels (“That Bird Guy”), Rebecca White from Engineers of Tomorrow, and Dr. Pamela Brittain from The Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences. We even expanded our horizons with some quirky, fascinating media spotlights—like how water towers work and what it’s like to ride the strange curved elevator at the Neues Rathaus in Germany!
