4 Degrees Cafe is a cafe run by students, for students. 4 Degrees Cafe got its name to raise awareness of global warming. When the global temperature rises by 4°C, irreversible damage would have been done to the Earth. Thus, the name reminds us to take actions against the issue.
4 Degrees Cafe is an educational and entrepreneurial initiative where students take the responsibility of operating a cafe within their school premises. This is to provide practical learning opportunities, foster entrepreneurship skills, promote teamwork and responsibility, and enhance the overall school environment.
A student-run cafe can be an exciting and enriching experience for everyone involved, offering valuable lessons that go beyond textbooks and classroom lectures.
Planning and Approval: The idea of a student-run cafe is proposed by students or teachers. They present a detailed plan, including the concept, menu, budget, and objectives, to teachers for approval.
Fundraising and Budgeting: To start the cafe, students may conduct fundraising events, seek donations, or secure financial support from the school or local community. A budget is created to ensure that expenses are managed responsibly.
Design and Setup: Students may be involved in designing the cafe layout, choosing furniture, and setting up the space. This hands-on experience allows them to learn about interior design and project management.
Menu Selection: The students collaborate to create a menu that suits the preferences of their peers and adheres to any dietary guidelines set by the school and HPB. They may offer a variety of snacks, beverages, and possibly healthier options.
Procurement and Inventory: Students are responsible for procuring ingredients and supplies necessary for the cafe. They learn about inventory management, cost control, and the importance of sustainable sourcing.
Staffing and Training: Students take on various roles, such as baristas, cashiers, and servers. Training sessions may be organized to ensure they have the necessary skills to perform their tasks efficiently.
Marketing and Promotion: The student-run cafe needs to be promoted within the school. Students can use social media, posters, and word-of-mouth to attract customers.
Operational Management: Students operate the cafe during designated hours, ensuring a smooth flow of operations, maintaining cleanliness, and providing excellent customer service.
Financial Management: The cafe's financial aspects are managed by the students, including pricing and revenue tracking.
Community Engagement: The cafe can also be used as a platform to engage with the school community and build relationships.

Nanyang Nature Society would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your generous support these past few years! Your contributions have played a pivotal role in helping us maintain our backyard and ensure the smooth operation of the 4 Degrees Cafe.
Do you remember the sale of resins and the initiatives that our Upcycling Focus Group has held? Thanks to the funds we raised from these projects and our profits from selling cakes and drinks at the 4 Degrees Cafe, we have enriched our Backyard and Cafe. Here are some examples of how our earnings were utilized:
Garden tools! With our earnings, we have invested in garden tools to help us maintain our backyard, and provide you with a beautiful backyard!
Seeds! We purchased a variety of seeds, including cherry tomatoes, mints, thyme, cucumber, and more.
Flowers and potted plants! Thanks to the earnings we raised, we were able to adorn the backyard with aromatic herbs and vibrant flowers such as bougainvilleas and daisies.
Cafe items! We have used our funds to maintain our coffee machine, refrigerator, and ice box, as well as buy more cups for containing our drinks.
Lastly, to upkeep the outdoor dining area! Using our funds, we have been maintaining this dining area so that you can have a pleasant and comfortable experience.
Furthermore, I am delighted to share that our very dedicated Backyard team has been working tirelessly since the beginning of this year to rebuild the Backyard. The flowering and spice plots have been successfully replanted and the results have been incredibly rewarding. We invite everyone to come visit both our Backyard and Cafe!
We have also been working to give back to the community through projects such as Save The Pen, during which we collect pens that have run out of ink from the school, refill them, and donate them. Thank you for supporting our fundraising efforts to buy pen refills, through our fundraisers Easter Sale (2022) and Thrifts and Giggles (2023).
In 2021, we were able to donate 600+ pens to Children’s Wishing Well, a charity organization for children from low-income families and disadvantaged backgrounds whose parents could be unemployed, ill, have abandoned them, or are incarcerated in jail, and Methodist Welfare Services. In 2022, we were able to donate 351 pens to Global Village for Hope for redistribution to underprivileged children in Myanmar and Indonesia.
Once again, thank you all so much for your unwavering support, which has enabled us to have a greener, and more sustainable school environment. We hope that you will enjoy your time at the 4 Degrees Cafe and Backyard! Thank you!
