March 2024 Update
Having a school garden run by students provide a hands-on learning experience, and also fosters a sense of responsibility, teamwork, and environmental stewardship. Look how far we have come... " Where flowers bloom so does hope"- Lady Bird Johnson
We harvested the guavas! Jacquelyn and Xin Rui couldn't resist eating it. Don't worry we washed the guavas before consumption.
Check out our flowering bed at the backyard garden! The flowers are blooming beautifully.
2023
Nanyang backyard launched their official instagram account to create more backyard gardening content for the public!
25 July 2023 - The seeds have germinated! Can't wait to transplant them to the raised beds.
Our flower plot is also growing well, there are many more surprise addition to the plot! They have been attracting alot of pollinators to the garden.
The garden has transformed quite a bit since the start of the year. We build pathways in the garden to avoid people from trampling over the grass and also the grapefruit vines are growing really well.
Look we have been adding fertilizer to our papaya tree and it has finally borne fruits after so long!
Planting new edibles into the backyard garden!
mulching: collect deadleaves and put them on top of soil. They retain water in soil and is good for plants growth, as they help to keep the soil cool.
Transplanting new plants to brighten up our garden!
composting: members cut up food scraps and create a pile of layered food scraps, dead leaves, coffee grounds and sawdust/wood shavings.

28th Feb 2023: Guided Garden Workshop with Ms. Iris
It's raining so we had to work indoor, planting the seeds and hoping the germination will be a success! Plants need supplements too so we added "roots strengthener" to the soil. Collective efforts from the CCA, the cafe girls helped to build the compost bins.
21st Feb 2023: Guided Garden Workshop with Ms. Iris
We had to rebuild our garden this year and start afresh! Come back and check us out in Term 3!
Food Compost! Every CCA members are to contribute by bringing food scraps from home weekly.

2022 Reflection:
What did we do in Sem 2🤩😍
We managed to introduce new plants (like the banana, ulam raja and the balsam) into the garden! Apart from that, we also continued composting (and started using cafe ground coffee to reduce the need to throw them away). Lastly, we weeded the plots and harvested sesame.
What did we do well🥰🥰
We started and finished project founder’s day (which was reshaping the garden in time for founder’s day). We also managed to transplant multiple plants (such as japanese rose❤️) and they are growing well! Lastly, we tried multiple ways of growing tomatoes🤩, including growing them upside down in suspended PET bottles.
What can we do better👍🏻👍🏻
We wanted to work on the weeding and watering during the holidays as most of the plants dry up without water for 2 months (except from rain). I managed to get some prototypes of octoplant from the aesthetics SIA (which requires a bottle of water to be screwed to the prototype, then makes use of osmosis to add water to the soil when the water in the soil evaporates). We also decided that as a group, we should pay attention to the garden more and share interesting things observed in the garden in the group chat! Lastly, we should all work on being nicer to each other such that the time spent in CCA is enjoyable.
What will we be doing in the future👀
We will be working on introducing more flowering plants! Last year, we had the concept of an edible garden, but next year, we will introduce flowering plants. In fact, we are currently considering introducing mexican sunflowers 🥰😍😍
Commercial chicken maure
These pellets can be poked into the ground surrounding the plant. Water to dissolve it.
Organic chicken manure mixed with compost
It doesn't smell and is airy. Mix with soil for the ultimate potted plant.
After digging out plants (and you dont have new plants to put into the ground) use dead leaves to cover the ground so that the soil is protected).
Sunflower !
Transplant the sprouted seedlings to the beds of soil so that they have more space to grow.
Soil regeneration
Using soil from the raised beds combined with chicken manure and water to grow the sunflowers in.
Sunflower bloomed :))
Attracts lots of pollinators so 👍👍

3 Steps of Transplanting
The plant should not be sitting below/above ground level. Roots should be fully covered with soil.
Do not scrape away the soil it has been growing in to avoid "shocking" the plant.
New Plants:
At this point we can't really tell if its orange cosmos or ulam raja...though we're hoping its ulam raja!! they have really pretty pink flowers.
Can't wait for it to grow!
Placed with the pandan to create a rocky terrain :))
Transplanted them...
