Roles of a NYNS Leader
NYNS leaders play an important role in guiding and directing individuals or groups towards a common goal or vision. Here are some of the key roles of a leader:
Visionary: A leader sets the direction and creates a vision for the CCA. They communicate this vision to their team and motivate them to work towards achieving it.
Decision Maker: Leaders make important decisions that affect the CCA or team. They gather information, analyze it and make informed decisions that benefit the CCA.
Communicator: Leaders communicate their vision, goals, and plans to their team. They ensure that everyone understands their roles and responsibilities, and provide feedback and support to help team members perform at their best.
Motivator: Leaders inspire and motivate their team to perform at their best. They recognize and reward good performance, and provide support and encouragement to help team members overcome challenges.
Problem Solver: Leaders are responsible for identifying and solving problems that arise in the CCA or team. They work collaboratively with their team to find solutions and implement them effectively.
Role model: Leaders set an example for their team members to follow. They demonstrate the values and behaviors that are important to the CCA or team, and inspire their team members to do the same.
Overall, a leader's role is to provide guidance, direction, support, and motivation to their team, to help them achieve their goals and reach their full potential.
Roles of NYNS' Executive Committee (EXCO)
PRESIDENT:
The President oversees everything in the CCA. Taking charge of projects (eg 4DS, ISDC) and school wide CCA events (eg sec one trials, open house), she assigns manpower, delegates tasks and works closely with the OT or EXCO to ensure that everything runs smoothly and efficiently. Together with VPs, she opens CCA sessions and addresses the cca whenever needed.
She is the bridge between the cca teachers and CCA members, bringing competitions and projects to members, disseminating information and aligning our goals. Furthermore, she is the bridge between the school management and the CCA, where the school goes through her to reach CCA members, such as the order of CCA jackets.
As a Student Leader, the BEL engages in school wide initiatives, events, and discussions with other boards of BOM and SC.
VICE-PRESIDENT:
The Vice President assists the President in managing the CCA. She is in charge of communication with the teachers, as well as overseeing any CCA events and competitions to ensure they run smoothly. She will also play a major role in behind-the-scenes planning and logistical work for CCA activities (e.g. sec one trials, 4DS, CCA competitions, CCA camps etc). She is expected to keep in touch with the happenings within the CCA (and especially the focus group she is assigned to) such that she can help identify and resolve any issues that appear.
SECRETARY/TREASURER:
The secretary-treasurer is in charge of all administrative and financial matters of the CCA.
For administrative matters, her main duties are (1) taking attendance every CCA session to ensure that everyone is accounted for throughout the whole CCA session (2) uploading the copies of parent’s letters and medical certificates of the absentees into a google drive shared with the teachers, (3) recording the details for all EXCO meetings and (4) creating a google form to collate the bio data of all nyns members at the start of the year.
For financial matters, the main duty of the secretary-treasurer is to (1) count the earnings of the cafe after every CCA session and (2) upload the earnings and expenditures of the cafe onto the financial records sheet, (3) file all records (receipts, cafe log sheets, etc) to ensure that none are lost or damaged and (4) check the financial claims of nyns members when they have bought something for CCA use. (5) She is also expected to work closely with the Cafe IC to ensure that 4°Cafe is profiting, and it is thus recommended for her to be in the Cafe focus group at least once in her term as Secretary-treasurer.
PUBLICITY:
The Publicity rep is in charge of managing the Instagram account and microsite of NYNS.
For matters related to Instagram: The Publicity rep is expected to draw and design aesthetically pleasing posts for events NYNS has. Anything that is to be posted on the Instagram account comes under the responsibility of the Publicity rep. To maintain activity of the account, the Publicity rep is encouraged to proactively post CCA related content on Instagram stories too.
For matters related to the microsite: The Publicity rep should proactively update all sections of the microsite after receiving pictures from focus group leaders or teachers. For example, CCA achievements, external activities as well as focus group activities members do in CCA.
If the CCA requires other publicity material (e.g. logos) or areas needing aesthetic direction, the Publicity rep would be the one to take charge in designing or decorating.
ACTIVITY REP:
The Activity Rep mainly focus on planning for CCA wide bonding sessions as well as the holiday camps. They take charge of the main bulk of the ideation process as well as the logistic planning. This consists of planning and preparation of games, lunch/dinner preparations and other activities. After proposals have been drawn up, Activity Rep would then delegate tasks to other EXCO members (i.e. Facil Roles, Sourcing for certain logistics etc.) to execute said plan. Moreover, the Activity Rep also head the ESN programme for the CCA, with them being in charge of conducting weekly bird watching sessions as well as liaising with teachers and organisations to coordinate activities for participating students. Lastly, Activity Rep also plan the games held in Sec 1 Trials. On top of these roles, Activity Reps are also involved in EXCO discussions (as all EXCO members are!)
BACKYARD FOCUS GROUP IC:
The Backyard IC creates schedules for watering and weeding duty and come up with ideas to ensure that everyone does their part in maintaining the garden. Furthermore, she opens focus group discussions on how to plan the garden and ensures that everyone is contributing. By liaising with food citizen, she is informed of the different ways to manage the focus group efficiently and builds the garden to be a fun place filled with biodiversity!
CAFE FOCUS GROUP IC:
The Cafe IC overlooks and leads discussions for all events held in the cafe.
She would have to make sure that all supplies needed for duties to run smoothly are purchased and available in the cafe. This includes the supervision of the purchasing of cakes and ice by allocated Cafe members. She would also head down to the cafe in the morning to turn on the coffee machine and get the log sheet ready for opening hours that day. Additionally, Cafe FG IC would come down during recess to receive the cakes, syrups and milk, who will then pass the invoice to the teacher in charge for them to make payment.
Furthermore, cleanliness is another aspect in which the Cafe FG IC would involve all Cafe members in. Reminders for the CCA are sent out regularly by the Cafe FG IC. Reminders include how the cleanliness in the cafe should be maintained, details of any events that will be carried out soon and any updates of the cafe along the way.
She also sends out emails to the school who would then reply to any queries from the staff and students. They would also keep track of the attendance of cca members during their allocated duty slot.
Lastly, the Cafe IC is also responsible for passing on their knowledge in the cafe. This includes the frothing of milk and training for the secondary 1s.
UPCYCLING FOCUS GROUP IC:
The Upcycling FG leader overlooks and coordinates school wide and/or external projects under upcycling, and would have to plan ahead in ensuring there is continuation of projects for the group to work on. For CCA sessions, the ic would have to distribute tasks to focus group members and gauge regular workloads based on planned project timelines for the smooth development of projects. In addition, she would be the main person engaging with external organisations/partners, and sometimes school management figures on behalf of the group. Other responsibilities of the Upcycling FG leader would include ensuring the well-being and involvement of all focus group members.
EXCO 2024-2025
NYNS President 2024- 2025
Experience:
My experience as bel has been nothing short of a fulfilling one. It provided me with countless opportunities, both to serve the cca and the school. As BEL, I strived to be the bridge between students and teachers, and seeked to bring more learning opportunities to the cca, equipping them with skills beyond the four years in Nanyang. Occasionally, work has to be done behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of cca sessions and events. However intimidating it may sound, I believe that with the passion for our cca, any challenge would only be yet another exciting adventure to embark on! Being BEL also empowered me to step up and lead in school wide events that made me grow as a leader. Although this journey has had its ups and downs, it is definitely one of the most memorable parts of my Nanyang journey. The soft skills I have gained such as communication, empathy, judgment and responsibility, will follow me throughout my life and I’m incredibly grateful to be the BEL of Nanyang Nature Society B25!
NYNS Vice-president 2024 - 2025
Experience:
Being ABEL has been an incredibly rewarding and enriching experience. It allowed me to contribute not just to the smooth running of the CCA but also to the growth of our members. From planning events to communicating with teachers, I gained valuable insights into leadership and teamwork. There were moments of stress, but overcoming them made the journey all the more rewarding. One of the most fulfilling aspects was seeing our efforts translate into meaningful experiences for our members. This role has taught me resilience, responsibility, decision making, problem solving and communication skills. Though the journey has had its ups and downs, it has enabled me to step out of my comfort zone and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve and grow in my role as ABEL of Nanyang Nature Society B25!
Secretary / Treasurer 2024 - 2025
Experience:
I am very grateful to be able to take up the role of Secretary-Treasurer of NYNS, as it certainly helped me to grow in many areas and work with the rest of the EXCO in planning events. Through my leadership experience, I was given the platform to learn skills like using Google Sheets to track our financial records and also explore the most efficient ways to complete my tasks. Although it was not easy to handle both the administrative and the financial matters at the same time initially, this has definitely honed my organisation skills and built my confidence as a leader.
Publicity 2024 - 2025
Experience:
I am very grateful to have had this opportunity to be a part of the NYNS exco. Learning how to communicate with the other exco members has greatly improved my interpersonal skills. With every post I make, there will be a lot of improvements that others will suggest, and I have learnt to use this constructive feedback to ensure the final product is one that I will be proud of. I have learnt to know my limits and to ask for help when needed. Designing social media posts to share about our CCA and its events has given me a chance to unleash my creativity. In conclusion, taking on the role of publicity rep will be one of the most unforgettable, amazing and rewarding experiences in my life, where I was able to expand my skill set with values and lessons that will be useful in the future.
Activity Rep 2024 - 2025
Experience:
I had a lot of fun being Activity Rep, brainstorming games for camps and bonding sessions with EXCO! Before joining, I was not fully aware of what happens behind-the-scenes, and it was interesting to see all the planning and discussions put into just one bonding session. I’m thankful for my seniors, who taught me on what to do in this role; and also for the opportunity to learn more about leadership in NYNS. It’s extremely fulfilling when receiving feedback that NYNS members enjoyed bonding and camps, and makes all the effort so worth it!
Backyard Focus Group Leader 2024 - 2025
Experience:
Being Backyard IC has been one of the most fulfilling and enriching experiences of my life!! Throughout my journey, I have honed crucial leadership and communication skills, learnt how to delegate work and plan things for Backyard to do, as well as communicate with the teacher(s)-in-charge. More importantly, I have learnt to work with all the people in Backyard and created so many fun memories with them! Even though it can be tiring at times, I think just seeing everyone having fun while working to improve backyard brings such a huge sense of satisfaction and backyard will always hold a special place in my heart. 💗💗
Cafe Focus Group Leader 2024 - 2025
Experience:
Contributing to the CCA through my role of Cafe IC has taught me a multitude of lessons. The one thing I have taken away from my year or service is the dedication and perseverance needed to stay committed to my role to ensure the smooth running of Cafe. This past year in this position has taught me how to manage my time well, communicate with others and handle stressful situations when things do not go according to plan. Moreover, having this role allowed me to bond with my CCA mates from different levels and get to know them better, assigning them to tasks that they are skilled at. I have found this role to be very fruitful in my leadership development and am thankful to have been given such an opportunity to serve my CCA.
Upcycling Focus Group leader 2024 - 2025
Experience:
As the Upcycling IC, I have thoroughly enjoyed planning events like the Farmers Market and ICES with my focus group. Though sometimes stressful, this leadership opportunity has been incredibly rewarding. Unlike sports or performing arts CCAs, upcycling has no fixed schedule, allowing us the flexibility to pursue projects we are passionate about. I have gained valuable life skills such as communication, creativity, and open-mindedness through collaborating with teams and businesses, as well as equipping me with essential soft skills like how to grab someones attention through designing posters. Serving as Upcycling IC and a CCA EXCO member has been a meaningful and educational experience, and I am grateful for the lessons I have learnt and look forward to applying these skills in the years ahead.

EXCO 2022-2023
NYNS President 2022 - 2023
Experience:
Serving as BEL for the past year has really allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and push myself to greater heights - in terms of my capabilities as a leader, and as a person! Adaptability, accountability, delegation and being able to communicate my ideas effectively, were just a few of the many qualities I have honed through my leadership journey in nyns. I have also gained a deeper understanding of myself, of my strengths and areas of improvements. Getting in touch with my emotions during the tough times as well….
There has certainly been a lot of ups and downs that have caused me to question and doubt myself, but having to overcome these challenges has only brought me back stronger and more ready for more! I remember for sec one trials, I didn’t have proper work delegation and organisation, so I ended up mugging certain aspects of it by myself. I’ve learnt that this is not a one man team, exco is there to help and I can assign tasks for higher efficiency.
All these challenges are the pinnacle of what made my nyns and leadership journey so fulfilling and memorable, making me the person I am today.
NYNS Vice-presidents 2022 - 2023
Experience:
(Clarabelle) I enjoyed directly contributing to CCA events, but something else that was extremely beneficial in helping me hone my skills most was interacting and working with many different types of people, each with their own personalities and working styles! Though definitely trying at times, I would still recommend being in EXCO as an excellent platform for learning.
(Jiayao) Being vice president of NYNS was a very fulfilling and enjoyable experience for me, as it enabled me to be part of the behind-the-scenes work that has to be done to ensure the smooth running of the CCA. It also gave me many opportunities to step up and out of my comfort zone, thus enabling me to hone some skills in a way I could not have previously (e.g. communicating with teachers, organizing and troubleshooting CCA events etc). It also granted me the opportunity to work with many like-minded individuals similarly passionate about the CCA, which created a conducive environment for us to learn from each other, and learn together. While there certainly have been ups and downs when the work was overwhelming or disagreements sprang up, overall, this role has widened my horizons and brought many meaningful experiences!
Secretary / Treasurer 2022 - 2023
Experience:
I am really thankful for the skillsets and experiences that I was able to pick up during my term as Secretary-Treasurer. From basic accounting skills to creating more efficient Google Sheets to understanding the admin backbone that keeps NYNS, or any other organisation going, I was able to hone my skills to become a more coordinated person that can ensure the smooth running of the tasks I am in charge of. Personally, I felt like the process of settling administrative and financial matters was very therapeutic and helped me wind down from the energetic hustle and bustle of CCA, so please do consider running for Secretary-Treasurer!
Publicity 2022 - 2023
Experience:
I really enjoyed being able to utilise my artistic abilities in the role of Publicity Rep for the CCA. There is a big sense of accomplishment that comes from completing a designing project or an Instagram post. I am thankful that I was able to hone my creativity and sense of aesthetic direction through this position, whilst taking pride in my work. Some challenges may include time management, leading to last-minute work and stress. Thus, it is advised to plan out your time wisely without procrastination!
Activity Reps 2022 - 2023
Experience:
(Esme) I love Activity Rep!&!#% I feel super delighted when I am able to present the CCA with games that they enjoy. Some challenges may include the difficulty of building an event from ground up and time management. Activity Rep is a balanced role with a manageable workload and fun interactions with EXCO and CCA members. Those creative, organised and fun-loving would definitely love being the Activity Rep and should definitely run for the role.
Although the number of Activity Reps will be reduced, I assure anyone that the role remains highly viable. It greatly enhances skills such as event management, planning and communication, serving as a great platform for growth.
(Noelle) I love activity rep too &*(%&$&^&# !! #Working as an activity rep has been one of the most fulfilling experiences in Nanyang :) It is a joy to plan activities for the CCA to bond! (and have fun) Being an activity rep can be time consuming and even overwhelming at times due to the tight timelines. (but its definitely worth it!!) Activities reps have a lot opportunities to work together with other CCA EXCO members and put their creative juices to use! Through my experience as an activity rep, I have learn many skills such as event planning and facilitating skills!!
Backyard Focus Group Leader 2022 - 2023
Experience:
I really enjoyed my time as the Backyard IC! Being involved in the planning of CCA sessions has really strengthened my forward thinking and efficiency skills. For example,I have to estimate how much work should be completed in one day and ensure that we do not overun/ end too early. This trains my forward planning and time management. I also have to delegate tasks to seperate members in the group such that each member is engaged and more efficient. Although i have experienced many challenges, they have helped me grow and learn as a person, as well as heightening my leadership skills. For example, I often struggle with ensuring that watering duties are diligently carried out daily. Hence, I post reminders in the CCA group chat as well as individual reminders to ensure that my CCA members do not forget. Another challenge i face is keeping focus group members engaged and keeping motivated to work under the sun, hence I decided to constantly encourage and motivate them through focus group games and breaks. This valuable leadership experience has allowed me to develop my interpersonal relationships and clarity of speech. I am very grateful for this opportunity.
Cafe Focus Group Leader 2022-2023
Experience:
My journey as Cafe IC has been a really fun one ^-^ Being Cafe IC allowed me to interact with many members of nyns which made me step out of my comfort zone and get to know them on a personal level. Being IC also helped hone my leadership and communication skills in which I was required to be actively involved in discussions and had to work closely with the teacher in charge. Due to my heavy responsibilities as a Cafe IC, I put a lot of pressure on myself in which I tend to choose to work on things myself. However, I have slowly learnt how to delegate tasks to the members more efficiently. The memories I have made in Cafe with the members are extremely fulfilling to me, be it trying out a new drink concoction or folding strawberry origamis together ;)
Upcycling Focus Group leader 2022 - 2023
Experience:
Being FG ic has been a rewarding and enjoyable experience, and I've felt great contentment from being part of purposeful projects. Although having more responsibilities may be stressful, I'm glad to always be able to reap something new from what I do, like learning how to plan ahead for the group and improving communication within the team. Working with my cca mates and being able to hone important skills like time management has also made me really grateful for my role in nyns.
