Garden Program

HYDROPONICS: The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) has selected the City Of Henderson to receive a Farm to School Implementation Grant. Through our farm-to-school initiatives and critical thinking about opportunities and challenges facing nutritional challenges today, we were recipients of the USDA Farm-to-School Grant for the hydroponics system.  Not only do our students have the opportunity to work in an outdoor garden, but they also engage in learning through hydroponics as well for support to urban communities.

EDIBLE DESERT GARDEN: Students will participate in planting an edible garden to provide hands-on learning and nutrition education from the ground up for the students.

GARDEN CLUB: McCaw's Garden Club will involve not only students, but parents, families, and community members to expand our knowledge on nutrition and garden education.

CHEFS IN SCHOOLS: McCaw will have our very own chef, who will provide demonstrations and get kids cooking taking them from hands-on harvest to table as well as provide nutrition education and teach healthy lifestyles the students can bring home to their families.

FARMER'S MARKET: Two Farmer's Markets will be held at the end of November and the end of May.  Our Farmer and students will harvest, bag, and price the product.  They will then set up a table and sell our products to families and the community.  The profits from this market will go back to our school and help our garden grow!

This program is designed to go well beyond the classroom to grow leadership and cooperation skills; practice delayed gratification; opportunities to increase self-esteem and build on visible success.

Garden Farms is a non-profit organization, that supports McCaw with hands-on garden education. They provide activities, environmental awareness, art events, nutrition education, and farmers markets.
