McCaw School of Mines

The mission of the McCaw School of Mines Foundation and McCaw STEAM Academy is to provide resources for a quality educational experience in the areas of geology, earth science, mining, and history to all who visit the McCaw School of Mines.

The idea for McCaw School of Mines was born in a local fourth grade classroom. The teacher was instructing a course on mining in Nevada, and felt that a papier-mâché model would help the students get an idea of what it was like in a mine. Shortly after, the Gordon McCaw Elementary School staff discussed turning that idea into something big. The result is the 4,500 square foot McCaw School of Mines, which opened in 1996.

This immersive experience, now open to everyone, provides an in depth look into an industry that has played a major role in Nevada’s history.

THE MINE EXPERIENCE!

The McCaw School of Mines is Nevada’s only simulated underground gold mine. Open to the public on the first Saturday of each month from 9am-2pm, visitors can tour the mine, explore outdoor exhibits, and even pan for gold. (Panning for gold is available to visitors over 45” for an additional $5) The mine shows the important history of mining in Nevada, in a fun and interactive exhibit.
