McCaw Instruction follows our own designed instructional model that provides each staff member with a well-defined instructional school operation procedure guideline. It provides a reference and guide to enable each teacher's full knowledge and participation in the education program existing at McCaw STEAM Academy. The information embedded in this page defines our instructional model and provides context to programs.
McCaw’s MINDSET encompasses high expectations for all students through individual goal-setting, critical thinking, and project-based learning with scaffolded support.
McCaw’s FOCUS is on using data to make instructional decisions for each individual student and motivate them to their successes, daily through ENGAGEMENT, CULTURE, and ACADEMIC RIGOR. This is accomplished through 1) CONSISTENCY 2) COLLABORATION and 3) CELEBRATIONS
1. Build positive relationships with the McCaw Community to create classroom cultures where students want to be in class ready to learn and be celebrated for achievements!
2. GROWTH of EVERY STUDENT by 1+ year in READING! Read Like a detective with purpose – Prove it!
3. 100% ST MATH Completion, Math Fact Memorization! Learning through hands-on manipulatives and the use of multiple tools!
4. WRITING across the curriculum with purpose/rubrics/goals! RACE-Restate + Answer + Cite + Expand/Explain
5. Understanding and Implementing Next Generation Standards in SCIENCE and Comper Science Standards through hands-on project-based learning.
CCSD Grade Reform & McCaw Grading Expectations
McCaw's grades are a measure of achievement. Learner behaviors are not factored into the academic grade, to ensure student achievement is not distorted. Student learner behaviors are assessed using a school-wide citizenship rubric communicated through progress reports.
McCaw students are able to have a reassessment to ensure they receive credit for what they know or understand. Students cannot have a reassessment on a benchmark test; however, they will be allowed to reassess on summative and formative assignments after following established protocols to ensure they have mastered or progressed in the standard(s) before taking a reassessment.
Grades will have a minimum "F" in the grading scale to ensure all students have an opportunity to progress in the standard. In Infinite Campus (IC) a student(s) grade is cumulative for the year. The first semester grade grows with the student to average out at the end of the year providing the final grade in the standard content area.
McCaw Celebrates Attendance!
McCaw STEAM Academy Elementary School promotes consistent attendance, which is extremely important here at McCaw. We need our students here daily and on time to help them meet grade-level standards. Every month that students have perfect attendance they will receive a prize!
Classrooms create a system with names of those who have been here at school the entire month with no absences. At the end of each month, the administrative team and wellness team will come and deliver a pencil or prize for those who have been in school the entire month with zero absences.
