Math with Mrs. Martinoff
Gr. 9 students have started the year by using numbers to describe important aspects of themselves and the barnyard. For example they may have used the number 5110 to represent how many days they have been alive or they may have used the fraction 3/5 to represent the fact that out of the 5 different types of animals that are currently in the barnyard (goats, ducks, chickens, turkeys, cat), three of them are poultry.
Science 9
This week, the students began their unit on Biological Diversity. They learned about ecosystems with high and low diveristy, and why that is important. We finished the week by building little ecosystems in a jar! The students gathered several important components for creating a self-contained ecosystem within their sealed jars: gravel (for drainage), soil (support root systems), and plants themselves. On Monday, we will be adding pillbugs to the jars in order to populate the ecosystems with decomposers, thus completing our self-contained systems! The students will collect data on the progress of these jars over the next coming weeks.
