We have been enjoying our outdoor spaces and the amazing weather!
Getting to know the commercial turkey poults. We discussed the differences between the poults and the broiler chicks! One definite difference was the little 'horn' (snood).

We used the herbs that the grade 2 class grew and we cut them up, we smelt them, touched them, some tasted them, and we guessed what they were.
Some of them smelled awful.... according to this face.
And some of them smelled good.... according to this face.
We have been learning about measurement! Most of our class is 13 "sheep" tall! They had to work together to help measure each other!
We have been really enjoying all of the spring weather! We took our science class outside to build ramps and launch monster trucks! And yes Mr. Jeff was ok with that!
We have enjoyed all of the work that comes along with having a farm, we cleaned the barn, raked some pens, and dug in the garden mud!
The Kinders and the Grade 1 class combined for a day full of science in honor of National Science Day. We were inspired by our guests from Eagle Point when they talked about snow. We decided to take in the last bit of snow we have and do some fun experiements outside. Students learned:
What makes snow melt the fastest - salt or baking soda
Coloring mixing with primary colors
Painting with snow
Snow cycle using our own body heat
Does snow sink or flaot?!
Exploding snowman using acids and bases
Snow volcanoes
Snow slime
It was a busy day outside and we are so glad we still had some snow around to help us out! Thank you to all the parents who came in to help us for the day as well!
What better way to welcome this beautiful weather than with some fun new learning centers!
Did you ever wonder how snow if formed?! Our Kinders were able to learn about the science of snow and how snow is formed. With the help of some Q-Tips, our class built thrir own snwflakes and even went out and learned the snowflake game.
We are eagerly awaiting the newest members of the herd to come. We went out and took a guess on when we may welcome some new baby lambs. The Kinders also go to see the egg incubator being prepped for the chickens eggs to be placed. Spring is so much fun!

What better way to learn then some new heart themed centers. The student used Geo-boards to explore shapes, new playdoh mats, letter and alphabet puzzles, and our favourite, roll and cover.
This past week we welcomed some angry mother nature! To take a break from inside recess, no outside time, and no buses, we wrked with our Grade 6 buddies to create a tree lanscape. The Grade 6 students were so patient and allowed the kinders to explore on their drawings.
What better way to learn then some new heart themed centers. The student used Geo-boards to explore shapes, new playdoh mats, letter and alphabet puzzles, and our favourite, roll and cover.
Thank to our NHCS barnyard, we were able to explore the barnyard and find different items - animals or objects, that correspond to the numbers 0-5. Some students were super creative and this really helped build some teamwork.
Which liquid will dissolve a candy heart the fastest - water, carbonated waters, or vinegar? Make sure to ask your child for the answer!
The Kinders predicted an early Spring, however the groundhogs and lobsters called for more winter... 6 more week in fact. The students got to elarn about graphing, the history of groundhog day, and create some masterpieces that are showcased outside our room. We are going to make the best of the next 6 weeks!
The next animal we learned about was the Arctic Fox. Like the moose, we examined what they are, where they eat and live, how they adapt to winter, and what makes them unique. Students had a great time watching them pounce for their food in deep snow. Our students even learned that an arctic fox closely resembles our barnyard cat Peaches!
The kinders learned all about the different parts of a moose and why they are important. We even compared their features to our animals in the barnyard. This was a great wat to show what they have learned this past week!
Do you know what farm animals physical appearance closely resemebles a moose? If you guessed a ... GOAT you are correct! The kinders went out and looked at the farm animals but the wind was not in our favour so we got some help from our buddies and were able to teach them a thing or two about moose!
On Friday, the whole school got to partake in SEED day. This months theme was mindfulness/wellness. Thanks to Ms. Duiker for organizing this fun afternoon. We had animal relay races, explored our senses in the tree, practiced yoga, learned about plants and made homemade tea, and then learned about a balanced meal for humans and animals.
Thanks to our Grade 6 buddies, we went out and guessed the weights of of 3 Market Hogs. Let's see if any of our guesses were correct at the next assembly!
Since we had so much fun finding letters, we decided to find missing numbers with the help of barnyard animals.
Patterns are definetly our favourite math activity. This one allowed them to practice their fine motor skills, listening to directions, and sense of achievement.
An absolute favourite activity in Kinder by far! The students teamed up with a partner and went on a letter hunt throughout the school all while being "sneaky ninjas".
Even though it was cold and windy, the Kinders were excited to watch the chore students look after the barnyard animals. Thanks to the chore students for taking some extra time for us!
Can you make an AB pattern?! The kinders sure can! We used different stamps and shapes. What a fun way to start learning about patterns.
Thank you to our Grade 6 buddies for helping bake and decorate cookies with us! We had a great watching an old Christmas movie while eating our decorated cookies and hot choclate.
What a wonderful guest to come on our last day before break! The students were excited to share what they wanted for Christmas and they even recieved a new Humble herd ornamanet.
Even though it was cold, we still went out and explored alongside our Grade 6 buddies. We had a great time looking at coniferous trees and making memories in the snow.
Ever wonder how a coniferous tree (aka Christmas Tree) grows?! The kinders learned all about why pinecones are essential and how sometimes we need helicopers to help transport large trees!
The kinders had some fun this past week with different centers that challenged them. They got to use tangrams on the light table, create mitten names, farm animal patterns, and more.
We scowered through the lookbook this year to create our letters to Santa. There was even a special mailbox that we got to deliver our letter too!
Kinder Air was ready for take off! With such a long flight we made sure they had cookies and juice to keep them comfortable. Our first stop was the Netherlands. WE then made our way to Germany and France. We will be continuing our travels all the way around the world to learn about their holiday traditions.
Our Grade 6 buddies came and hid stickers in our classroom while we were outside for recess! What a fun surprise to come back too. Then they came and took us for an extra long recess. I don't know who gave better spins on the bucket?!
Thanks to our buddies, we were able to learn about rate of gain and what we think Coffee and Espresso weigh. Stay tuned to find out the final totals.
Thanks to our 8/9 buddies for taking us out on a hike into the trees. We surely do appreciate being able to explore the woods with you even though it was one of the coldest days this year so far! Thanks Mrs. Klatt and Ms. Perry for also being thier to lend a hand.
Swimming lessons have finished for the year. It has been great to see the confidence grow with each student over the course of 8 weeks. The final day just showed how much they loved the lessons by the smiles on each of their faces!
What better way to spend some time outside then with fresh snow. The kinders created snow soup on our new outdoor kitchen and set sail on their pirate ship log. Thanks to Mr. Jeff for sampling all the "poisonous creations"!
Thanks to Dr. Bauman for coming and teaching us all how to preg. check ewes. It was exciting to see some little heartbeats in some of our ewes. Can't wait for lambing!
Wish Tree
After reading "The Wish Tree" the students wrote down thier own wishes and we went on a hunt for our very own wish tree. Can;t wait for some of their wishes to come true!
With the colder weather, comes new literacy and numeracy centers! The class loved exploring with light tables, pop its, paint, and puzzles all while practicing their letters and numbers. Who new learning could be so much fun!
Did you know that pumpkins float?! The Kinders learned why pumpkins float even though they are heavy...compared to apples which float. Thanks to Coffee and Espresso for giving up their stock tank for this lesson.
An afternoon filled with dancing, crafts, and treats. Thanks to all the families who signed up and brought in treats. It was a great afternoon. Even better, the Kinders won the door decorating contest and won an nacho apple bar!

With Halloween around the corner, the kinders got to create farm animal ghosts to hang on our ghost door. Lets hope we win!
Thanks to our Grade 4/5 friends for teaching us all about clouds and how to know the difference between clouds with their cloud finders.
We read "Pumpkin Jack" and are trying to decompose our own pumpkin and see if we can regrow the same pumpkin come fall! If you are looking for a great read, you can watch the read aloud online.
The kinders began learning about seasonal changes and what better way to learn than painting with Q-tips to make leaves. We learned about what happens in fall and why the leaves change colors.
Fall brings Halloween which also means its pumpkin season! This month we have been focusing on pumpkins and how they compare to apples. The students got to explore a pumpkins lifecycle thanks to a pumpkin farm in NEwfoundland on Ag For Life.
The class got to have some fun collecting leaves and seeing who can throw the highest.
From the veggies to the prepping, the kinders did it all. We made homemade chicken and potatoe soup! Thanks to Mrs. Stene and Mr. Jeff for all your hard work to make sure we could eat after swimming.

To cap off our apple unit, what better way then to make apple pies. I may be biased, but i heard they were pretty awesome!
Did you ever wonder why onions make you cry? We were able to take our very own onions that were grown at school and learned the sciece to the "bad gas".
Did you know that apples not only taste good, but they make some awesome art projects!
Thanks to Cargill for their generous donation, we were able to have the Earth Rangers come and talk about animal conservation and even bring some neat animal ambasadors with them!
The kinders tasted and compared three different kinds of apples - Red Delicious, Granny Smith, and Gala. The verdit was that Red Delicious were the best.
Not only did we learn about an apples life cycle, we started our own! Lets hope in a few months we will be be sprouting our own apple trees.
Swimming - Week 1
Who doesn't love to explore natures backyard?! It's even better when you find some neat critters to look at.
The kinders learned how everything starts with a seed (or egg) when it comes to things we eat. We talked alot about apple life cycles and even turkey life cycles. Then we looked at what makes them the same and different.
Soaking up the last bit of the nice warm weather with a picnic lunch. Even the wasps stayed away!
Not only did we learn about apple life cycles but we got to use apples in our daily literacy centers. The students used different hands-on manipulatives to sort, trace, spell, and puzzle together aplhabet letters!
The kinders were beyond excited to see our new mebers of the herd this week. They quickly learned how much they love to eat! We cannot wait to learn more about the steers in lessons to come.
The kindies were surprised how much the garden grew. The dill weed was a huge hit. My favourite saying - Mrs. Kohel it smells like pickles!
The barnyard to NHCS is such a fun place to learn. The kindies went out and explored the new changes and even got to meet some new herd members - turkeys!
One important skill students will learn in kindergarten is independent centers. The kindies learned through play how our centers work... and by Thursday, they had the hang of it!
This month we will be learning about apples. Not only will students get to taste different kinds of apples, but they will bake, measure, write with, and grow their own! Stay tunes to see how our learning unfolds.

The first day of school is long awaited by many. While many are excited to come meet their new classmates and show off thier new kicks, some are left a bit nervous and scared. We read this heartfelt book to ease our way in and even had some fun with painting our hands and eatting some hershey kisses!
