Tools and Programs Used in Our Classroom
IXL is a program that gives individualized numeracy programming to students. They have completed a diagnostic "snapshot" to see where they are at the beginning of grade 6. They (and you) will be able to watch their progress on the IXL site throughout the year. Students will have some opportunities to practice at school and are encouraged to practice at home as well.
Words Their Way is a word study program that further individualizes the way students learn to spell words. It is a hands-on approach to practice spelling patterns in words. It allows students to manipulate words and/or pictures into different categories. This sorting process helps students analyze and examine, compare and contrast, and differentiate the patterns in words. This hands-on approach not only motivates students to practice spelling words but it also helps students internalize the spelling patterns in words for the future. At the beginning of the school year, the students were administered a spelling inventory that helped determine which spelling stage the students were performing. From there, they are placed into small groups of students to work on their spelling!

Each 30 minute block spent outdoors will be tracked throughout the year and kept in our classroom on a colourful page. This does not include Phys-ed or recess times! Students often take their classroom materials outside to learn in different environments like the barnyard, the trees, the playground or the mud kitchen!
Long range plans have been made, resources collected and projects brainstormed to bring the Alberta Curriculum for grade 6 alive!
Our grade 6 class is a tight knit community this year with only 10 students! We take time each day to try a wellness practice and to connect with one another personally through talking circles, sharing our writing, and having time to chat.
