Our Humble Herd Farm
A key part of agriculture and environmental immersion in our school is the animals in our barnyard. Teachers and students regularly use the animals to learn from and with. Check out our animals below along with some examples of how they are used in students learning. To see concrete learning examples, check out each grades page.
Barn Yard Fun!
Our Students have the opportunity to learn an array of farm yard tasks! This year we are so excited to be halter breaking our steers!
Commercial Market Turkeys we purchased
Ms. Samantha loves these turkeys!
Henrietta brooded and hatched 7 healthy poults!
We hatched a couple poults and gave them back to Henrietta to raise
One of our Junior High students taught the other kids all about clipping a steer for a show.
Prepping our manure compost bins
The bins will need to be stirred and turned often to produce soil!
We welcomed 6 news lambs to the Humble Herd this spring!
All the lambs are doing so well! We are privileged to be bottle feeding a few as one of our ewes just cant keep up! "Triplets is a lot of babies to take care of" say the kids!
We are teaching our Division one students to how to bottle feed! The students will weigh and track the growth of the lambs.
These lambs will all be for sale in the fall.
First Day with Pigs at NHCS!
Early Morning Start to load the Broiler Chickens and Turkeys to go for processing! When the projects are ready to go in for processing the chore managers are responsible for loading them up and coming along to the processing plant to fully complete their jobs.
"Agriculture is our wisest pursuit, because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good morals & happiness."
We have started a worm farm!
Preparing for our pigs! Learning how to pound posts by hand! Some of our Junior High Students helped measure and decided the best way to build our pigs pen.
Recess at NHCS looks a little different for our students! They get to come and spend quality time with their animals, letting the goats out for exercise is always a favorite.
Our students are always eager to help us out with any work!
Students learning how to measure out the feed supplements for the feathered friends!
The Students and I figured out a safe way to weigh our hogs. We had so much fun with this project and are looking forward to hearing the feedback from our buyers, and of course BACON!
Broiler Chickens
We are excited for Spring! We will be raising 40 chicks!
Ducks
Similar to the chickens, the ducks help us to learn about animal life cycles, and their eggs give us the opportunity to compare duck eggs to chicken eggs.
Sheep
Our sheep are bred and expected to lamb March-April, stay tuned for the countdown!
Our Bunny project is supported by Humble Beginnings Playschool! www.humblebeginningsplayschool.ca/
Laying Hens
The laying hens provide us with eggs to both sell to our community and to hatch in the spring. To see data on our eggs, please take a look below at the data collection section.
Our eggs are for sale in the office for $6.00/Dozen
All proceeds go back into the AG program.
Goats
Triscuit and Pepper never fail to keep things interesting. Our goats display many behaviors and help us learn about them.
Here they are preparing to run in the school wide Terry Fox run!
This is our team of students that have been working hard with our steers. We are looking forward to grooming the steers to look their best for the sale at our annual Hand In Hand Fundraiser. The steers will be for sale in our live auction April 12.
Stock Trailer!
NHCSA Purchased a stock trailer! We will use this to haul our animals wherever we need to get them. Thank you to our generous donations and fundraising efforts for making this possible.
We are excited to be using the farmbrite management system to collect data within the barnyard, soon our data collection team will be collecting daily data with tablets that have purchased for the barn yard. We will also use this to track daily tasks, and weekend chores.
Amount of Chicken Eggs collected
(awaiting news from the data collection team)
Every day our Humble Hen Managers go outside to the farm to tend to the laying hens. Not only do the students ensure the hen's basic needs are met, they bring in eggs to be sold to our school community! Eggs are collected, washed and packaged on a daily basis. Students are required to track the amount of eggs that they collect. At the end of every week, the data is entered onto a Google Form, which then updates here. It will be interesting to see how many eggs our hens lay in a school year!
Mrs. Bustin handles most of our egg sales since she answers the school's phones! She is in direct contact with the chore kids and directs them when she needs eggs brought in for a sale. This data is also entered on the Google Form weekly. The money from our egg sales goes directly back into our AG Program. Thank you for the support.
