Week 8 - Oct. 15-17
Players had key terms held up to their forehead and their teammates had to try to explain the term that was there..... lots of laughs were had!
Week 7 - Oct. 6 - 10
We learned about different crops that are used around and for Thanksgiving. Students had to research a variety of questions about the different crops. They then took their information and made a Pie Wheel to help display it.
Last week, we went on a Medicine Walk, and this week we started our "Voices of the Land" Project. Students have to choose one of the plants the we learnt about and now they have to create a voice for one of these plants within a short story.
We put our knowledge to the test in terms of buoyancy, density and water displacement with our golf ball float challenge.
Week 6 - Sept 29 - Oct. 3
This week we had viscosity races! Students built ramps and raced different liquids to see what liquids had the highest viscosity. We also did a density tower challenge.
Our junior high students had the opportunity to compete in the LDAA Peace Hills Meet in Wetaskiwin this week. Our junior girls volleyball season is also underway.
Week 5 - September 22-26
School pictures were taken in the barnyard this year; the sheep have returned from pasture and we have 2 heifers this year!
The grade 8 & 9 classes had the opportunity to travel to Banff National Park and hike the 9km into Glacier Lake where they camped for 2 nights.....Lots of great memories made!

Students participated in the annual Terry Fox Run this past week.
Week 4 - September 15 -18
Student Council Elections
This week we held student council elections. For some positions, that had more than one student running, speeches were given and students had the opportunity to vote for who they thought would best fulfill the roles of that particular position. The student council will be responsible for planning junior high activities throughout the year. They will also serve as liaison between the School Board and the junior high student body.
Great North Seed Potatoes Farm
NHCS students visited a local potato farm to learn more about this specific type of farming. Students learned information about the step by step process of how a potato ends up on your plate, starting with a plant in a laboratory all the way to buying potatoes and other items from the store. NHCS students were also treated to a delicious lunch in which they were able to sample some of these other items such as french fries, perogies, potato salad and potato chips. Thank you to the Bakker family and their partners for a wonderful field trip!
Week 3 - September 8 -12
In Grade 8, we have been talking about students bringing in things to put into our Natural Ink Project. One student asked if he could bring in an avocado. This lead our conversation into inquiring how to plan an avocado. Hence, Karl the Avocado!
We started phase 2 of our Natural Ink Project in LA. We headed out into our barnyard and harvested a variety of things. Turkey feathers, beets, corn, pine cones, and so many other goodies. Students had to place the items into boiling water, and we will check back next week to see what colors we get.
We got our steps in & our brains going with some 4 corner review of elements, compounds, homogenous & heterogenous mixtures in Science this week.
Olds College
Grade 7 - 9 students spent the day at Olds College learning about how to conduct research. They went on a tour of the Smart Farm, learned more about the farm equipment used and visited the meat shop.
Junior High Field Sports Option
Students in grades 7 - 9 have been enjoying learning the skills and rules involved in Flag Football. Students will have a couple more days of skill development and game play and they will then learn about the sport of Lacrosse.
Week 2 - September 2-5
Today, the Grade 8's were introduced to their monthly project. This week, the 8's determined what objects they wanted to test for their project. We had a variety of items like sand, blackberries, and lavender, to name a few. As well, we researched the process of creating natural inks. Students found out different items that we can add to our inks to help preserve them, make them a thicker consistency, and vibrant colors.
This week we learned all about the WHMIS symbols!
We are getting ready for our upcoming backpacking trip.... we looked at foods to take, practiced using our stoves, what to pack.....

Math with Mrs. Martinoff
Gr. 8 students have started the year by using numbers to describe important aspects of themselves and the barnyard. For example they may have used the number 5110 to represent how many days they have been alive or they may have used the fraction 3/5 to represent the fact that out of the 5 different types of animals that are currently in the barnyard (goats, ducks, chickens, turkeys, cat), three of them are poultry.
