Week 8 - October 15 - 17
This week we focused on writing descriptive sentences with our barnyard animals as the subject of our sentences. We followed this up with some peer editing skills.
This week's enrichment class had us doing some watercolours!

Week 7 - October 6 - 10
Last week, we went on a Medicine Walk and this week, we are working on a Recipe Book Project where students are using ideas from the walk to help them create recipes.
We did a science review this week called 'Bluffing' where you could potentially earn points for your team even if you were bluffing! Everyone gets a whiteboard to write down their answer but only the student with the number rolled on the dice has to show their answer.
This week, we took our novel study outside and read in the trees!

Students finished their Indigenous Dwelling projects. They turned out great!
Week 6 - September 29 - October 3
Grade seven Social: Indigenous Dwelling Project
Grade seven students have begun to put together their Indigenous dwelling miniature in Social Studies class.
Grade seven Social: Junior High Harvest
Grade sevens harvested our "Three Sisters" crop, connecting the school garden to Social 7 content studying indigenous agricultural societies.
Week 5 - September 22 - 26
Farmer's Market
The Grade 7's have been working on a "Farm to Table" project. It started with them planning out their crops, then figuring out their yield, and finishing off with how they wanted to package their goods. This week, they completed their Farmer's Market where they got to sell their goods and other students got to purchase (with fake money!). They got to get a feel for buying and selling.
Our Humble Herd is back! The sheep have returned from a summer on lush green grasses.... We have two new heifers (names to come soon).
Students had the opportunity to watch (& some got right in there to help out) how to process the turkeys this week.
Indigenous Miniature - Social 7
Grade seven students have begun gathering materials for their first Social Studies project: Making a miniature first nation's dwelling, using only materials they find from outside!
Week 4 - September 15 - 18
Last spring when we planted our three sisters garden - we tried a little experiment..... within one of the dirt piles, we put fresh manure, in another we tried some ash, while the 3rd, had nothing added to it. It was unanimous - the manure piles grew better!
Grade 7's took a break from the classroom, and we learned about health in the trees. This was a great opportunity to talk about personal safety and how this can look in different evironments.
Student Council Elections
This week we held student council elections. For some positions, that had more than one student running, speeches were given and students had the opportunity to vote for who they thought would best fulfill the roles of that particular position. The student council will be responsible for planning junior high activities throughout the year. They will also serve as liaison between the School Board and the junior high student body.
Great North Seed Potatoes Farm
NHCS students visited a local potato farm to learn more about this specific type of farming. Students learned information about the step by step process of how a potato ends up on your plate, starting with a plant in a laboratory all the way to buying potatoes and other items from the store. NHCS students were also treated to a delicious lunch in which they were able to sample some of these other items such as french fries, perogies, potato salad and potato chips. Thank you to the Bakker family and their partners for a wonderful field trip!
Week 3 - September 8 - 12
Students had the opportunity to work on their adding and subtracting skills with decimals through a variety of word problems related to the farm. Example - A farmer bought 3.75 kg of chicken feed and 2.45 kg of pig feed. How many kilograms of feed did the farmer buy in total?
We wrapped up with our seeds on the window experiment this week....
Mentor Time
Students met with their Olds College Mentors for the first time to discuss their Charter Project proposals.
Grade 7 - 9 students spent the day at Olds College learning about how to conduct research. They went on a tour of the Smart Farm, learned more about the farm equipment used and visited the meat shop.
Junior High Field Sports Option
Students in grades 7 - 9 have been enjoying learning the skills and rules involved in Flag Football. Students will have a couple more days of skill development and game play and they will then learn about the sport of Lacrosse.

This week, we added some fun to our parts of speech review.
Tower of Terror - this activity involves some good team work and communication!
We headed outside in LA to look for clues as to who killed Mr. Smith!
The Grade 7's played Frisbee Golf in the Barnyard this week. They tested their accuracy and had to navigate around the barn, the garden, and a variety of pens. However, sometimes it does not go as planned!
