To kick off our new science unit, energy, we went outdoors and discovered places that energy is used in nature!
Vegetable instruments are so much fun to play and serenade the animals with!
Jobs in agriculture are so important to our community. One important job we talked about was a butcher. Taking a look at our pigs, we discussed where different cuts of meat come from.
Wrapping up our matter unit, meant building something using materials! Students worked in groups to build bird feeders.
Trying food grown from our garden can be an adventure! This week we cooked and tried Acorn Squash! Acorn squash is delicious when cooked with brown sugar, most of the students asked for seconds!
Getting the garden ready for fall is a big job! It took all our might to pull out the sunflower stems, and a whole lot of teamwork to turn the mat that the zucchini plants grew on to dry out. Not to mention the teamwork involved in driving the wheelbarrow over of the pile.
We love learning with pepper and Triscuit! We felt and learned about the anatomy of goats and compared them to sheep. We learned that sheep and goats chew their cud, which means throwing up in their mouths!
Zucchini horns! After harvesting the zucchini we turned the stalks into horns. They are very finicky, so getting them done right was no small feat.
Fall is a great time to inspect and learn from harvest! Sunflowers are a great source of learning and can be used in many ways. They also are very messy and provide great feed for birds all around.
Harvesting squash is always a many hands make light work kind of job. We worked together to find all the zucchini plants, and many other gourds and squashes.
Terry Fox Run is an annual tradition raising money for Cancer research. We ran hard and did so many laps!
Sink or Float
Investigating materials is nothing but experiments! We explored various items and materials, testing them to see if they float.
Learning about phonics can be made way more fun when you take it to the outdoors to search for words that contain sounds.
Great North Seed Potato
Arguably the best day of the school year so far! Students enjoyed a potato based lunch and then spent the day learning about potatoes, jobs related to potatoes, and of course potato digging.
This week was busy soaking in the fresh air and warm sun!
We took to the outdoors to learn about and practice even and odd.
Learning about natural and manmade materials is easy when you have the mud kitchen to sort through manmade toys and natural pinecones.
Our lambs made excellent presenters as we talked about comparing numbers. Mrs. Samantha and the chore kids weighed all the lambs, we talked about how much they weigh and compared them using numbers and symbols.
Classroom Rules
A crucial part of starting a new year at school is setting up classroom rules. Getting everyone's input is an important part of creating a community where we all follow our rules for a great school year.
Garden Harvest
Students are always excited to see how the garden has grown over the summer. These sunflowers are massive!
Dandelions are an incredible tool to practice counting by 1s, 2s, and 5s. Students collected dandelions, rocks, sticks, etc and practiced their skip counting.
Counting
There is no better place to practice writing than in the barnyard. Students practiced finding and recording words around the barnyard that contain a short vowel sound.
