Gr. 8/9 Feudal System Simulation
SYNOPSIS
To connect with the social studies curriculum, students participated in a feudal system simulation. Unbeknownst to the students, each were assigned to be a specific member of Renaissance Europe society. Some were kings and queens, some were lords, some were knights and others were peasants. Throughout the morning, students were assigned specific tasks, that at the time didn't seem to make sense. For example, a couple, who were unknowingly knights, were asked to walk around the perimeter of the school yard to make sure everything was okay. Other students were told to go and ask the royals or lords if they needed help with anything or to actually do their work for them. This lasted for quite some time. At the end of the exercise a discussion was had asking students what the purpose of the activity was. Some were able to see that it represented the different levels of a feudal society.
