The Needham High Counseling Department is committed to advocating for all students and to being an integral part of the NHS community. Counselors assist and guide students and families with academic planning, social/emotional issues, post-secondary planning, and many other areas in a student's high school experience.
NHS Counseling Core Values
Value and respect for all
Be knowledgeable and current in all aspects of School Counseling
Be approachable and accessible to all students and families.
Our Guiding Philosophy
Find Balance - high school can bring a lot of excitement as well as stress, so it is important to take care of yourself and build in time for fun and the things in your life that bring you joy
Academic Success - NHS is full of wonderful people and resources! Take advantage of them, and be sure to put your best effort forward
Self-Advocacy - developing relationships with your teachers each year is crucial to a positive high school experience. Your teachers want to know you and help you, so get to know them and let them get to know you!
Extracurricular Involvement (in and/or outside of school) - think about how you can get involved and find opportunities to explore your interests, skills, and leadership!
Personal Growth - adjust study skills as needed, challenge yourself, learn to be a good self-advocate, grow your independence.
Plan for the Future - thinking about life after high school can be both scary and exciting. Work with your counselors to take the necessary steps in exploring and creating a picture of what you'd like to do after you graduate. Each of you are on a unique path, and we will help you develop a plan.

Dear Seniors & Parents/Guardians of Seniors,
December is a busy task-oriented month and can also be a time of a roller coaster of emotions….
For those who applied somewhere EA or ED, this coming week is a big week as most will begin hearing from schools. For those finalizing their first round of applications to meet regular deadlines, they are likely juggling many competing demands before the holiday break.
We know our seniors are anxious. This is very normal; we’d worry if they weren’t a bit on edge. We encourage our seniors to make sure they have friends to talk to and do fun things so they are taking care of themselves and each other. And we encourage them to remember that even though you are probably trying hard not to show your emotions, you are also waiting and wondering along with them.
Knowing what those admissions decisions are will unleash a wide range of emotions. If they are admitted, they’ll be excited as well as relieved. If deferred, they still have a shot and should do whatever they can to strengthen their application. If they are denied, they will naturally be disappointed. With a denial we urge our seniors to keep in mind that being denied is absolutely not a reflection of who they are as a person. It just means there were other applicants to that particular school whose credentials were, for whatever reason, a better match. For those making alternative plans, this time holds the same range of emotions and wonders. It can be an equally exciting or challenging time depending on the outcome of these plans. Regardless the path and outcome, our seniors remain the wonderful individuals they are regardless of the decision received.
During this time of decision and planning, the School Counselors remain a support for you and your senior. We remain available to talk through choices, develop alternative plans, and figure out how to close out their NHS experience. Please reach out if need be.
We wish you Happy Holidays.
Your NHS School Counselors
UPDATE
With one week into the Holiday Fund, we have collected just under $500. We only have a week and a half left with our deadline of Wednesday, December 17th.
If you are willing and able, please consider contributing to the NHS Holiday Fund. Monies collected will go towards purchasing gift cards that will be discretely distributed to students and families who have been identified as those who would benefit from some financial assistance this time of year.
Last year 120 families were provided with over $8,100 worth of gift cards. Any amount that you are willing and able to contribute will be very appreciated. Our generous PTC is starting us off with a $1,000 boost to get us going. Thank you PTC!
We have updated our donation method to have donors use the QR code where monies will be directed to the PTC Holiday Fund account to be converted into gift cards.
While this season's holidays and family traditions may differ, for many of us, it is nevertheless a fun and celebratory time of the year. Thank you, in advance, for contributing, and brightening the holidays for our families in need.
Best wishes for your own celebration.
