Youth/Student Work Permits

Minors aged 14 through 17 years are required to obtain a work permit to be employed in the state of Massachusetts. To obtain a work permit, please complete the work permit application and, if applicable, the Record of School Attendance form (links are provided below).


Minors may not transfer a youth work permit issued for one job to another job. The application process must begin again, even if the employer is the same but the work location has changed.


The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has granted permission for youth work permits to be processed electronically.


- Youth Work Permits will be processed electronically (in-person processing is not available).


- Completed applications will be processed within approximately 5 business days from the date and time of receipt.


- Completed Youth Work Permit applications should be sent to the following email address: workpermits@needham.k12.ma.us


NPS Students:


- Use your school email account when submitting your application.


- Make sure your application is complete and includes all required signatures.


- Scanned documents or digital photographs are acceptable.


- Email your completed application to: workpermits@needham.k12.ma.us


Students that do not attend Needham Public Schools must submit the following:


- Completed work permit application. Make sure your application is complete and includes all required signatures.


- Record of School Attendance Form (required for students aged 14 & 15 years old).


- Photo ID (i.e. current school ID /or/ driver's license /or/ US Passport.


- Proof of Birth: birth certificate /or/ immigration record /or/ US Passport.


- Scanned documents or digital photographs are acceptable.


- Email all documents to: workpermits@needham.k12.ma.us


Incomplete applications will not be processed and will result in a delay in the issuance of a work permit.


Permit Processing Timeline


Completed applications will be processed within approximately 5 business days from the date and time of receipt. Staff will do their best to process permits as quickly as possible.


Plan accordingly and let your future employer know of this timeline, and coordinate your start date as appropriate.
