Flag Ceremony
By Emma Sherry
On November 17, 2021, at Northern Cambria High School, the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) donated a new American flag to the school. There was a brief yet touching memorial held outside the entrance of the high school where the flag pole is located.
Alongside the veterans from the VFW stood two of Northern Cambria’s own military. Dressed in their uniforms, seniors Austin Birchall and Levi Goss participated in the heartwarming flag ceremony. Both young men assisted by lowering the old, retired flag, and then presenting and raising the new flag donated by the VFW. The marching band also had a large role in the ceremony. As the flag was being raised, senior Shayla Bowser performed a brief melody of “Taps” on her trumpet. The marching band also played the “Star-Spangled Banner” to conclude the raising of the flag.
At the end of the ceremony, a group of students who wrote letters to the veterans had the opportunity to meet the men from the VFW that joined us for the memorial. The veterans and the students had their pictures taken, and that concluded the ceremony.
