Homecoming Game ends in Shocker!
By: Emilia Waugh and Hunter Kraynak
Have you heard about the winning kick? Northern Cambria won its very first game, and it all came down to the leg of a freshman. The week of homecoming had already been exciting enough with Friday’s pep rally and the dance coming up in just a day. Of course, Friday’s game was no exception. It had everyone clutching to the bleachers. The stakes were high, it was us against them, our field, our homecoming- we couldn’t let them win.
The Lions came out the gate red hot on a mission to ruin the Colts’ homecoming. They took the early lead scoring 14 in just the first quarter.Things were looking grim for the Colts seeing as they hadn’t won a game all year. However they say “don’t hang your head” for a reason because that's when the impossible happened. The Colts dug deeper and were able to finally put points on the board in the second quarter. Halftime came, and the court walked the field. The Colt’s king and queen were announced, and the game was back on. The score now 7-14, spirits were higher than ever and we were ready to take back the game. Before you knew it, we scored another touchdown! The score now sat at 14-14. The game was all tied up, but that wasn’t going to cut it. The Colts marched down the field, and stood right in front of the goal post. However, it wouldn’t be that easy. A simple mistake had left the ball in United’s possession. The Colts fought, and scrambled, and miraculously gained the ball back with only about 8 seconds left in the game. With only one second left on the clock, freshman kicker Trey Pershing lined up with the game on his shoulders. He ran up, contacted the ball, and drove it through the post with no time remaining. The final score was 17-14, and the Colt’s crowd went crazy. Northern Cambria officially won their first game on homecoming.
