"Congratulations to Alivia Tait and Martina Miller on their individual first-place finishes in the National History Day Regional Competition. The theme for 2022 was Debate and Diplomacy. Alivia completed an exhibit on the Genocide in Ukraine: The Holodomor. Martina completed a website titled, "The Stonewall Riots". Both students will move on to the state competition in May." - Mrs. Kline
What made you decide on the subject of your project?
Alivia: I chose my topic in August 2021. At that point there was nothing politically going on with Russia & Ukraine. I was introduced to the “Holodomor” by my eldest brother, through a Facebook article, in the midsts of my Sophomore year of HS. I was so blown away by all the horror that had taken place in Ukraine during this time & how well Russia/USSR had hidden any evidence of a Genocide from the outside forces. I was also very confused as to why not one time in my school career the Holodomor had been mentioned, especially when speaking of WWII & Joseph Stalins involvement. In simpler terms, I chose my topic solely to educate anyone willing to learn.
Martina: I decided on my topic because it was one of the first few I could think of that went with the annual theme "debate and diplomacy." I actually did some smaller research into each topic I was looking at doing, but I decided to go with The Stonewall Movement when I found a podcast Marsha P. Johnson was on where she said she wasn't at the riots until after they started. This was contradictory to what some of my relatives had told me over the years, so I wanted to find out who actually threw the first brick at the Stonewall riot.
How do you feel about moving onto the state competition?
Alivia: Thrilled! It took me an exact 5 months, start to finish, to do my project! I’m beyond proud of it. Especially since I was juggling work, school, and other extracurricular activities as well. Most nights I’d get home around 9:30 pm and would work on my project until 1 or 2 o’clock in the morning. To say I’m excited about moving on would be an understatement!
Martina: I'm honestly really relieved that I even placed, the website builder that I had to use wasn't the best to work with, and I even had to restart my website after a month of working on It. I'm a little nervous for the state competition, but I'm hoping that when competition day comes my nerves will be gone.
How do you think your project will perform in the state competition?
Alivia: I’m not very nervous for states, If I’m being honest. My project isn’t as “high tech” as some of the ones done prior. However, I know the topic of my project like the back of my hand & I believe that will get me farther than any type of technology I could’ve used. I also have taken into consideration the regional judge’s suggestions & have been making the changes needed.
Martina: I think I'll do fairly well considering that the critique I got at regionals was very minimal, and I already fixed everything from the critiques.
The Importance of Safety and First Aid In Classrooms
By. Emily Montanaro
The First Aid Kit was first invented by Johnson & Johnson in 1888. In 1901, the company also published the first Hand Book of First Aid which contained general safety and first aid information. In today’s society, first aid kits can be found just about anywhere and are extremely important in places used by large amounts of people for long periods of time, such as schools.
To ensure the safety and well-being of students, teachers, administrators, and other staff, first aid kits have been supplied in every classroom. Each and every school may do different versions of these safety kits, but the more prepared, the better. At Northern Cambria, the entire school district has what we refer to as ‘safety boxes.’ This is because our kits aren’t the typical small red box with limited supplies, but a large box that keeps students and teachers prepared for any event.
Over the years, since the safety box was first introduced, teachers have been required to bring the boxes for any emergency drill, such as a fire drill. This keeps everyone in the habit of being able to rely on our kits for anything from a paper cut to an emergency situation. Many students are now hoping to help supply these essential kits with newer products. This is an important objective in order to maintain a dependable classroom kit for everyone in the school.

HIGH SCHOOL ROOM ARRANGEMENTS By: Mya Bradford & Erica Hassen
Why consider new room arrangements? New high school room arrangements will work in any way for emergencies or even drills. They can benefit us in many ways for safety reasons.
For instance, some teachers' filing cabinets are in the back of the classroom and those things are pretty heavy, and it is pretty hard to carry if you are by yourself. So for this reason, we feel that we should put filing cabinets in the front of the classroom by the door or at least somewhat closer to the doors, so if somebody is by themselves in the classroom, they will have an easier time then having to go to the back of the classroom and try to push or try to carry it.
Now there is one other problem with classrooms… the windows. The windows can only open so far outwards, and with the little hook, you could easily get caught on it. We feel like we should fix the windows so that they can slide upward and can open all the way. This way people aren't getting caught if they are trying to escape. Trying to escape through a window is hard enough with a class room full of kids, but you will also need a ladder to get out of most classrooms. We think that every classroom on the second and third floor should have a ladder just in case something ever happens.
We don’t know if you ever realized, but the doors opened towards the “danger.” The doors should be hinged on the other side because it only makes sense. If there is a fire or a shooter the door is opening towards it. It is very easy to forget to lock or open your door when you are under stress trying to get everyone out or trying to keep everyone safe. If the shooter is on the other side of the building, people are going to try and make a run for it to get as far away from the shooter as possible, and if there is a fire people would be trying to get out not stay in.
These are all valid points that should be taken into consideration to help with our school. We think these are all good ideas for us to improve the safety of our school and the children!
