The Book of Boba Fett Review
By: Michael Adams
With the Book of Boba Fett premiering in December of 2021 and being concluded recently, there was a lot that happened. Obviously, there will be spoilers for the Book of Boba Fett, and slight spoilers for The Mandalorian. This show revealed many mysteries as to what happened to Boba Fett, and how he’s still alive, as well as what happened after The Mandalorian season 2.
During Return of the Jedi Boba Fett fell into the sarlacc pit, and was assumed to have died in it, due to the acid in the pit. It is revealed that his beskar armor actually protected him. His armor was stolen afterwards, and he was taken in by the Tusken Raiders and trained in their ways. As he is trained and masters their ways, he tries to help them so that they wouldn’t have to live in hiding, to get rid of the speed bike gang. Eventually though, they are presumably all killed by the speed bike gang though they were killed by someone else, which is found out later.
That is only half of the story, though. The other half follows Boba being the new Daimyo of Tatooine, with Fennec Shand being his adviser of sorts. Throughout the story, they attempt to gain the respect of the people of Mos Espa. This is done by taking down gangs in the streets and helping the mayor. The catch is, the mayor hired assassins to kill Boba Fett. This assassination attempt leads Fett to hire Din Djarin, the Mandalorian, as he prepares for a war. He hires Din at first to gather the people of FreeTown, formerly Mos Pelgo, to fight alongside Fett’s other troops. One soldier is actually the wookie that was sent to assassinate him.
The thing that I loved about this show was how the entire show was building up to the final showdown between the mayor’s troops and Fett and his soldiers. Then it takes two episodes to explain where Din was after giving Grogu to Luke Skywalker, and shows Luke training Grogu. This was important, due to the cliffhanger at the end of Mandalorian season 2. While I feel they could’ve waited until Mandalorian season 3, I’m glad they took the time to show it, mainly because Din Djarin is one of my favorite characters after his show.
That leaves the final episode, the final battle. It starts with Fett and Din finding out the leader of Freetown was assassinated, but they didn’t know who it was until they saw him slowly walking towards them. It was the man who trained Fett, Cad Bane. I loved seeing his first, and potentially final, live action appearance. He’s a really cool character in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars show. Of course, him being in the Clone Wars means that he’s pretty old, but it was still cool to see him. He is there to tell Fett to stand down, and to leave the town he is leading and defending. Fett refuses, and this starts the final battle. There were fights everywhere until Fett believed they had won, the enemy was retreating. Then, large droids, called Scorpnek annihilator droids, started invading the Mos Espa.
The droids couldn’t be hurt by anything Fett or Din threw at them, not even Din’s darksaber could get through the force fields. Fett retreated while Din held them off. Din eventually got away, and had a surprise waiting for him. It was Grogu, back from his brief training with Luke and wearing his foundling armor, brought by Peli Motto. Seeing the choice Grogu made excited me, because that meant that he and Din would be teaming up in The Mandalorian season 3. You may be wondering, “What choice did Grogu have to make?” because I never mentioned it. The answer is found in the show, I wasn’t going to spoil the whole show, you know; I’ve left out a lot of information so far. Din was confused at first to see Grogu, but definitely happy.
Grogu used the force to help Din take down one of the droids. While a small thing, I definitely loved seeing how much Grogu had improved with his force abilities. Fett then reappeared to take down the others, but not alone. He was riding on his pet Rancor. It was destroying the droids, but not easily. Eventually it got hurt and started rampaging, destroyed the last droid, and started destroying Mos Espa. This led to the best part, Grogu calmed it down with the force, and fell asleep next to it. I have no real idea why, but that was my favorite part of the entire show. It was very fitting of Grogu’s character, and it was definitely the right way to end the show, rather than killing the rancor.
I really enjoyed seeing what happened between Fett’s apparent death in Return of the Jedi and his appearances in The Mandalorian. I thought the explanation for how Boba Fett didn’t die was really well done, and really shows the power of beskar. While it could be argued that beskar’s strength was shown when it couldn’t be cut by a lightsaber, I would say both contribute to how strong it is. Overall, I really loved the show, and can’t wait for The Mandalorian season 3, and potentially The Book of Boba Fett season 2. I thought what they did with all of the characters worked really well, and fit their personalities well, and I highly recommend it.
