Students used their name to create an abstract design, which they then colored using markers. If you look closely at the designs you may begin to see letters. Students first drew their name in simple block letters and then traced it an additional 3 times by folding their paper in half. This project works best on a square paper. The letters shapes touch and combine with other letters to create abstract shapes. We also learned about the basics of color during this time. Students had to incorporate at least one pair of complementary colors, at least one primary, and 2 secondary colors. We also discussed how it is best to use markers by filling in an area with overlapping rows of color rather than randomly coloring or scribbling in an area. Below is a sample of the project using my last name, "Saenz" before it was colored. See if you can identify letters and names in the student samples !
