Still Life Paintings

Students painted still life paintings this year to practice painting techniques. Still life paintings are non-living objects and have been a popular subject for artist to paint for centuries. Although still life paintings are often simple everyday objects, they offer a number of challenges such as color mixing, painting different textures and capturing light and shadow. It is one of best subjects to focus on when learning how to paint. The focus of this unit is not on making a single painting, but rather learning skills to paint many different things. Because of this, students did several (3-5) smaller paintings over a 3 week period. We used reference pictures that are good examples of paintings that students can learn from.

Drawing Practice

Drawing is a fundamental skill within the visual arts. It is helpful for painting and sculpting as most artist will do preliminary sketches for their projects. We practice drawing once per week on Mondays during a 25 minute period called "Drawing Studies". Students can draw whatever they like during this time as long as they are practicing their drawing skills and tracing. Most drawings focus on improving observational drawing skills, which is helpful in learning to draw. Students can draw from a list of images posted in google classroom or they can find their own image to draw. In addition some students prefer to draw from a grid. With this method, the student's paper and the drawing must contain the same grid or a proportional grid. The grid helps students break down more complex forms and see lines and shapes in a more abstract way.
