Graffiti Inspired Words

In this unit we looked at graffiti and letter design as an art form. We analyzed some existing graffiti to determine some of the common characteristics. Students learned to create "bubble" style letters and "block" style letters. We discussed and practiced ways to add style and personality to our letters as well as experimented with adding arrows, crowns, halos and "bits". We noticed that a lot of graffiti samples included a shadow, an outline around the letters and the shadow, and a background shape. Many graffiti artist use a bubble or cloud-like background shape or a puddle-like shape. We also examined colors that are popular in graffiti and practiced different color combinations.

Students had to create a word or name (minimum 5 letters) in a graffiti style. They had to include bubble or block letters, a shadow, an outline and a background shape.
